Roo Bar, Clifton

Now renamed "Steam Bristol". Much more of a regular pub offer with good food and a range of different beers.

Started to use this pub a few months back and have been most Fridays early in the evening, while waiting to pick up my son. Its a great local pub whose regulars, once you've been in a couple of times, are happy to chat and bar staff who remember what you drink. Yes, there are TVs and kids are allowed, but that just makes it popular with everyone and probably means this local will survive and not become a supermarket. The Courage Best is fine and occasionally there are even free sausages and chips on the bar, but keep them out of reach of the pub dog, a large black lab :-)

Coach & Horses, Clifton

Visited with friends for the evening on 5 Sept after a gap of over a decade as we found the newly refurbished Jersey Lilly full up. Very pleasantly surprised as previously it had needed a lot of TLC which it has now received. Bar staff were friendly and happy to provide straight glasses or jugs plus dealt with the complicated wine orders (we were with our other halves) admirably.

We all ate, most of us having steak which was all served as requested (rare, medium etc) and tasted great. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this as place for a drink or to eat if you're nearby.

The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham

Wickwar have now been running the place for a year and I know its not been to everyones taste, but for the majority CPS is now a friendly community pub that welcomes and caters for all types of pub visitor. Theres now a regular weekly music and quiz nights and Pieminister pies on the menu.

Simon, the landlord, and his staff make every effort to make the place run smoothly and welcoming. They keep a regular changing rota of guest ales as well as Wickwar staples. They also always have a couple of ciders on.

Considering how easy it is to find poor pubs (admittedly not in Bristol where we do seem blessed) I would recommend the CPS to anyone from 18 to 90, cider, beer or G&T lover. This isn't an ad from a Wickwar rep just a happy local drinker.

Stonemasons Arms, Hammersmith

Popped in to kill a couple of hours before seeing Kate Bush at the old Odeon. Both staff who served me were very friendly and helped me choose an ale as my preferred pint of Fullers (Discovery) wasn't on. I ended up with a pint of Chiswick Ale which went down nicely. Their pork scratchings were also as good as you can get in a pub short of roasting the hog in front of you. I suppose the scratchings being served in a bowl will only reinforce some views that this isn't a pub, but I think if pork scratchings are served then the place is definitely a pub and I'll choose it over those that don't have them on the snack list. It might not be your favourite type of pub, but its still a good one and head and shoulders above many locally.

The Heart and Hand, Brighton

Discovered this pub late on Saturday night and it made our trip to Brighton very memorable. Not only is the jukebox one of the best I've encountered but any place that doesn't mind forty and fiftysomethings dancing gets my vote. Will be back when we're in Brighton again.

The Three Jolly Butchers, Brighton

Spent part of Saturday afternoon in here watching the Rugby. Very friendly staff and beer (Longman Long Blonde) was great. The home made pork pies were also superb and reminded me of what pork pies should be like. Definitely worth a visit.
