Metro Bar and Grill, Birmingham

Annoying customers, over priced, half decent ale and woefully dated inside - i'll pass thanks!

The Queens Arms, Birmingham

Living locally, I walk past here fairly regulalary. Haven't been in for a while after a few questionable pints a few years back but walked past the other day and saw a "Cask Marque" sign out front and thought it would be worth a try.
A massive improvement, very impressed with my pint of Doombar. Food was on offer too so called the missus down and had a couple of decent burgers, plus she loved the random (though awful sounding!) Raspberry Cider on a handpull - not a fan myself! All in all impressed, have started using it again.

The Rope Walk, Birmingham

Such a great looking building in a fantastic location - what a waste of space!
Awful coloured lights inside and a dodgy "DJ" who i'm sure doubles up as a bar memeber and suits 1980's weddings...
Drinks range isn't exciting, food cheap - the area needs a decent, quality, interesting bar, something funky and independent - like the Rectory but with cask - rather than a branded over styled pub. Sorry!!

The Actress and Bishop, Birmingham

Great place to finish the night off - just don't touch anything on cask or draught!! I know many people who have been ill from the pints here - stories of "yellow-headed guinness"
Stick to bottled beer though or spirits and its fine, good atmosphere and great staff.

The Red Lion, Hockley,jewellry quarter

As said above, linked to The Lord Clifden - "Urban Art Bar" (?!)
Alot smaller than its sibling, which can be annoying if there are more then seemingly 10 people in the bar.
Apart from that its good. Cask is better in my opinion then Clifden, slightly pricy for its draught products (4 a pint!!).
Generally go there for the food on a sunday, though stopped going as much as the only area to eat is in the backroom really, and with there only being 4 tables cramped together, getting a seat is an issue. Apparently there is an upstairs, though it is never open on a sunday, which is a shame as it would be nice to have some space. Courtyard is alright, fairly covered over.

The Lord Clifden, Birmingham

Looks frightening from the exterior and surrounding buildings but very nicely done inside! Interesting mix of art work, though possibly only because its fashionable at the moment, not sure how long it will last.
Real ales very nicely looked after though not as an impressive range as i'd heard, 2 standard and 1 guest. We stopped to have something to eat but in the end didn't bother as it looked like a nightmare trying to get a seat anywhere, seemingly lots of people just sitting around chatting, not many of them drinking anything by the looks of it. Food looked good though.
Overall nice place, great beer garden outside, can imagine would be busy if we had any good weather!

The Brown Lion, Birmingham

Live locally and went in the other day for first time. I've tried some of the 2 Towers ales before and always been fairly impressed so was looking forward to trying them at their birth place as it were!
Outside looks alot better then it did as Nicole's, though had some strange characters hanging around outside from the place next door Fusion, wouldn't fancy stumbling out of there late at night alone!
Inside is ok. Its clean though rather sparse and uninteresting. Toilets weren't the best though.
As for the ale, it was...ok. Not as good as i'd hoped, though cheapish (but bear in mind they make it themselves 5 mins away, you wouldn't expect it to be anything else!!).
Menu looked ok, didn't fancy anything off it though this time, may brave it another time. All in all, not overly impressed but better than Nicoles I guess! Hopefully will last a while and get better, but time will tell.
