The Shakespeare, Liverpool

Thought I'd try this place on the basis of its location overlooking Williamson Sq. Unfortunately, although the interior is pleasant enough it lacks any character, the beer is nondescript and the choice of music (mostly piped 80's shite) absolutely dire. I had no choice but to guzzle my bottle of Peroni, admit defeat and adjourn to the nearby Excelsior. Will not be coming back anytime soon. A wasted opportunity.

The Oakford Social Club, Reading

Came here on a Sunday evening so probably not the best time to judge it. Nevertheless an interesting place with a decent beer selection, a slightly bohemian air about it, and reasonably priced food (although sadly it is true that they do skimp on the chips). Would certainly recommend if you happen to be in Reading.

Outlook, Reading

Pleasant riverside spot for a beer or two, although the office blocks either side don't add to the ambience (something obviously outside of the management's control). Great in warm weather, no complaints at all, as I still like to think of myself as being a young'un despite being the wrong side of 50.......

Canal House, Nottingham

Nottingham is chock full of good pubs but this is one of the best. Great choice of world beers, decent scoff, just a short walk from the station, and a waterside location perfect for summer drinking. Came here prior to Reading's game v Forest; in the light of the game I wish I'd stayed here instead!

Panniers, Barnstaple

This is a perfectly acceptable Wetherspoons in a town which is seemingly devoid of any other decent pubs. just make sure you don't sit on the table in the corner opposite the bar which seems to be commandeered by Barnstaple's pikeys who insist upon a liberal use of expletives at a volume which ensures that they can't not be heard.
