Royal Oak, Lewes

Looks a bit uninviting from the outside, but the staff are really friendly and the draft Budvar is excellent. Have been back a few times, mainly on weekend/holiday afternoons, and it's never been busy - couldn't comment on what it's like on Friday or Saturday nights though. Prices seem decent for the area which is a big draw. My one criticism is the music - instead of Heart FM, some real Rock 'n' Roll would be nice...!

Anyway, this is one of the few pubs in Lewes that feels like a proper pub and not a fancy restaurant; well worth a visit.

The Swan, Lewes

Friendly service, lovely beer garden and good food. Not the best selection of lagers unfortunately, but they do have several ales and a real cider on tap.

The Kings Head, Lewes

Fantastic food, well kept beer. Does feel a bit more like a relaxed restaurant than a pub, but nice anyway.

The Pelham Arms, Lewes

Badger beer and one nice lager, plus board games. Nice place to spend an evening, and the pork scratchings come in generous portion sizes.

The Alexandra, East Finchley

My favourite pub. Good music, good beer (wouldn't object to seeing a Czech lager on tap though ;-) ), good staff, none of the screaming kids one finds so frequently in other north London pubs...and the games are a bonus.

Kings Head, Crouch End

Great selection of reasonably priced - for the area - beers, nice food (the condiments are particularly impressive). Shame they don't have TVs to show the football though.

Big Red, Holloway

The nachos were great (lots of toppings!) and the music good, but the 'entertainment' drags the place down a bit...went on a Friday night during an unfortunate screening of Bikini Bloodbath Carwash 2. :-/

The Intrepid Fox, St Giles

Good pub - staff and other patrons have always been friendly/relaxed enough and most important the music is great.

Of course, the loos could be cleaner and they could have Czech Budvar on tap and not just in bottles, but that's true of most places in London.

The John Baird, Muswell Hill

At 4 for a pint of lager, this pub has got a bit too pricey...even bars in the City are cheaper!

The Alwyne Castle, Islington

Indescribably bad staff - slow, rude, and apparently incapable of making sure people get served in the order they get to the bar. And the wait at the bar can be very long - over 20 minutes at one point.

The outside area is nice though and they have adecent selection of lagers (when they don't run out).

Every time I go to this place, I like it more. Good music, the guys behind the bar & other drinkers are always friendly, and the board games generally have enough pieces to be playable.

The lack of food is a positive too - means no children.

Only minor improvement I would suggest would be to clean the pipes slightly more frequently to make the okay beer really good.

The Clissold Arms, East Finchley

Inexpressibly bad. It took the bar staff ages to serve us our two pints of lager (which tasted rank anyway) even though we were the only people at the bar.

As the interior was particularly noisy - the barren decor doing much to amplify the noises emitted by the dining families who seemed to be the sole occupants of the space - we headed to the outdoor area. As we were about to take a seat, we only to be chased down by a staff member (surprisingly speedy when they want to be, it seems) and informed that we could not sit in the dining-outside-area (even though it was completely empty) and were promptly pointed to the outdoor 'drinking area', which is to say the back of the carpark.

We tried to choke down as much of our (again, very poor) drinks as possible whilst 'enjoying' the view of the numerous SUVs parked in front of the pub before making a hasty escape to somewhere less generally awful.

This is a great pub that we're very pleased to have as our local...the Staropramen always tastes great, my partner assures me the ales do as well, and the food is good too!

Good place to watch football.
