The George and Dragon, Shipley

Firstly I will state an interest. I know the new landlady of the pub.

Jenny and Dave took a brave step when they bought the G & D last summer, but they have done very well. A complete refurb and a clean broom.

Visited on the opening day and that was great, but the real test is can they keep it up – yes they have. We have been a few times since then and it has improved and improved.

Firstly for such a small bar, they don’t half do well. A choice of 4 ales, all kept in really good condition, 3 lagers and a draft cider. It’s a free house so they can change as they like but a choice of Harveys Sussex, Doombar and one of the local W J King’s beers, you can’t go wrong. And all in excellent condition.

Also worth a mention - Free House and not Hall and Sh1thouse beer. Can I call not sh... but do they really make beer

Service great. Hosting (and not just for people they know and we are not local local!) is excellent.
Then there is the food. Jenny said she would keep it simple home cooked pub fare, then she hired a French chef. So really the best of both worlds. Pub staples such as pies and steaks (beef and gammon) then add moules and guinea fowl and skate and the best hand made chicken kiev you can imagine. What more can you ask for? All came piping hot with lots and veg. Superb.
Back to the pub. The layout is unusual, so lots of different areas. A small dining room, a smaller dining room. A log fire , another hidyhole - a proper country pub.
Try it yourself

Red Lion, Ashington

Starting to become a bit of a fan of this place. Visit at least once a month now, even though its a bit of a drive. Always a good selection of beers with at least one local brewery appearing on the guest list and the staff are all excellent and well trained in both the food and drink on offer.

Out of the last 5/6 visits only one suspect meal (on a Sunday afternoon relief chef perhaps)

Steak evening good value. Boxing day visit similar to the themed evenings, a staggered booking system in order that everyone is served in a timely manner. How refreshing rather than trying to fill all the tables all of the time

Tip - Get on their mailing list for special events and the occasional freeby (Cocktails, Wine, Beer & Fizz this year)

The Half Moon, Warninglid

Three visits in the last 6 weeks , twice for meals and once for a beer.

Superb food, great beer try the Dark Star Over the Moon if its on, Hophead as a fall back.

Nice location, great beer garden in a very quiet village. Good staff to look after you, what more can you ask for? Just dont look down as you come through the main door. The well is deep.

Latest visit was with a group of 11 people and the chef still managed to get the food to the table at the same time, with no issues. The menu changes regularly and there is always a different Sunday lunch menu. The roast beef is to die for. I really do envy the folks of Warninglid who have this as a local

Fox Inn, Rudgwick

Well, well, well, what a surprise. Not my first choice because of previous reviews, but as we were attending as a group (of 8) So I went along with an open mind. I even put the dire prior visit, several years ago, aside.

I cannot praise the place enough. Plenty of attentive, but not overpowering staff. And a huge plus point, excellent food. A range of starters plus 2 * Salmon Fishcakes, 2 * haddock, 1 cod, 1 skate, Scallops and a Paella. Each dish superb.

The winners were definitely the coconut & garlic butterfly prawns as starters and the haddock and cod main courses. The portion sizes were huge and the flavours fantastic all nicely cooked & presented.

Definitely worth another visit. OK there was one downside Hall & Woodhouse Beer need I say more?

The Olive Branch, Horsham

Not sure what to make of this place. Hall & Woodhouse so the beer was guaranteed to be poor. Settled for a glass full of fizzy italian chemicals instead. Together with a half of cider, that was 6 gone. The London prices continued into there restuarant.

The food was nice enough - Sharing fish platter to start with, a steak and a fish pie. one sweet, one coffee and a bottle of wine. 70. Portions nothing exciting. Trying to be trend by using unsual serving dishes. Dont let them kid you that anything is home cooked. Apart from the steaks everything was clearly prepacked and portion controlled - the only real benefit to the customer of being able to see into an "open" style kitchen - why bother when your are serving microwaved mash out of a plastic box and adding the empty plastic box to stack for washing later. The "hand cut chips" were clearly mccains

Saying all that the ambience was conducive to a special night out. Decor very similar to The Black Jug, but without the real home cooked food and the huge range of ales

The Gun, Keyhaven

Visited last Friday. My son and I just wanted a simple ploughmans and a pint. I remembered the location from previous visit to the area and thought that it looked nice. I now wish I had read the reviews before crossing the threshold. The pub was quite quiet with two couples outside and a handful inside. We arrived a 2:25. We were not greeted with Good afternoon, what can I get you but We close at 3pm, so you will have to be quick. My head now says we should have just walked out.

We were hungry and it was hot and could not be bothered moving on and as they had various Ploughmans on the menu, we bought the drinks and quickly ordered. Again, wish we had not bothered. After a 20 minute wait we were served with Half a small batton each, and not much cheese and a bit of salad. The promised real ale chutney was a teaspoonful each served in tiny paper pastry case normally used for petite fours.

We were also told that we could only order once easily dealt with - a double round dont know why we bothered giving our money to the idiot.

About 4 other groups, mainly couples, turned away after we sat down. This was on the cusp of the main holiday season in a prime location next to small marina, adjacent to a tourist site (Hurst Castle) with NO competition, not even somewhere to buy an ice cream and the nearest pub a mile away.

In a nutshell landlord who clearly chose the wrong trade - poor quality food in small portions. Had it not been for the Sharps Doombar, I think I would have cried.

The Sir Roger Titchbourne, Alfold Bars

Visted on 2 April, with soem tripidation after some recent reviews. Was pleasantly surprised. Clearly there has been a lot of money spent un the refurb. The place is fresh and airy.

Whilst we booked in advance we declined eating in the resurant, preferring a table we bagged net to the fire in the Bar.

The beer gets a plus, thjough perhaps not the barman! Two of my favourites were amongst those on offer, though the Arundel Gold ran out, but the barman could not get round to chnaging the barreel. It was very busy with a huge party in the Resuarant. The bar became very busy too later on. We settled for Langhams sundowner for the rest of the evening. It too was well kept.

Yes, it was mainly Brake brothers style food, but the venison steaks we superb as was the Fish. Our veggie freind had the veggie burger, which scored 10/10 - but it was too big! I agree with previous comments about the chips, they could make thier own. The presentation of the food was another plus point.

A tad epensive, but still a good evening out

Now for the negative point - stupid policy. You get handed a menu which has the Bar food on one page and the Restuarant Food on the other. There is also a blackboard with 4 specials. Each menuu has about 10 choices, not etensive, but something for everyone, BUT. In the bar you can only have the bar menu plus the specials, in the restaurant you can only chose from the restuarant menu plus the specials. It all comes from the same kitchen, served by the same staff - WAKEN UP and smell the coffee
