The Watermans Arms, Oxford

Well having read in the Oxford Mail that the Watermans would be reopoening inder its new guise today (31st) we headed down there after work today only to find it closed with workmen still finishing off the refurbishment. There was no sign on the door to apologise for the delay nor to inform us of when it is finally expected to re-open.

Not a great start to the new regime!!

Queens Head, Hanham

Had an excellent meal here last night. Food was tasty, Wadworth ales of good quality and all served by friendly & helpful staff.

The Kings Arms, Oxford

Popped in for a couple of quick pints yesterday. The Youngs' Bitter was excellent as usual. Not busy but good general atmosphere and friendly efficient staff.
I would recommend it to anyone drinking in Oxford.

The Cross Guns, Avoncliff

Rather surprised by some of the reviews below. We visted the pub twice over two days of boating along the canal and both times came away with pleasent experiences. The Box Steam Brewery's Beers were all in excellent condition (I had to try them all) and we were served by friendly & knowledgeble barstaff. On our second visit we had an excellent meal in the restaurant area.
On my experience I would heartily recomend it.

The Watermans Arms, Oxford

Henry's former regulars are apprehensively waiting to see what the newly refurbished & renamed Watermans will be like. The pub is to be called the "Punter" despite there being no punting on the stretch of the Thames along which it sits. I agree that it needed a bit of a tidy-up inside but let's hope that it is still welcoming to the great local morris dancers and the regular fortnightly quiz night.

The Salamander, Bath

I always enjoy popping in here for a couple of pints from the excellent Bath Ales' brewery. Service is friendly, pub is tastefully decorated and generally very comfortable & relaxing. No intrusive TV nor overly loud music, great for browsing through the day's papers - of which a good selection is provided for customers.

The Eagle and Child, Oxford

Popped in last night for a pint with some friends that were visiting from out-of-town. Three ales on offer, of which Brakspears' Bitter and Hobgoblin were OK. We were served a lousy pint of Guinness though. Generally over-hyped and I agree with the comment below that the Lamb & Flag over the road is a better option.

The Fir Tree, Oxford

Popped in last night for a quick drink on our way up the Iffley road. I had an excellent pint of Olde Trip, although the soft drink options weren't great. The barman was very friendly and there was a good atmosphere in the pub. Worth a visit I reckon.

The Rose and Crown PH, Oxford

Brilliant little pub with great Adnams bitter
My only minor complaint is the price of the soft drinks 3.60 for a small bottle of elderflower presse, that's 60p more than my pint of bitter!!!

The Gardener's Arms, Oxford

I would have to agree with the three previous reviews of this great little backstreet pub.
Ales have always been in good condition and there is usually something a bit different to try.
The Food served is worth a special mention. Don't be put off by it being vegetarian - it is all really tasty and filling. The burgers are the best I've ever tasted (meet or veggie!!).

The Watermans Arms, Oxford

A favourite of mine. Only IPA & Morland Original on tap but they are kept in excellent condition and are always worth the wait. Great location in the summer to sit and watch the River Isis, a very tranquil spot but just a stones throw away from the busy Botley Road. Excellent pub quiz fortnightly on Wednesday evenings. Thursday nights through the winter you can enjoy the Morris musicians playing down in the restaurant area from about 9.30 and on alternate Friday evenings there is live Jazz.

The Magdalen Arms, Oxford

The Magdalen has just been taken over by new management, completely refurbished and is now marketing itself as a gastro-pub specialism in locally source produce. We tried it out last night after reading an article about it in the Oxford Mail.
There was Theaktons Best & XB on draught, of which I enjoyed a couple of pints of the Best - a favourite of mine that I don't see around Oxford too much. There seemed to be a decent choice of soft drinks too.
We also had some food there which was really good and not too badly priced.
Overall the pub is a million miles away from what the Magdalen was previously so is well worth a visit.
