The Boat, Berkhamsted

A popular pub that has just been revamped. A Fullers house with a good selection of beers and wines and food that looks okay, but I've never eaten there. They have spent a fair amount on revamping the interior and extending the canal side terrace and have removed the sky-sports screens after Fullers' decision to dump Sky altogether. It's quite nice inside, but they've made the bar smaller. I was warned before I went that service is a problem and sure enough, the now smaller bar was lined with disgruntled customers. The bar staff were friendly, young and polite, but had no awareness of who was waiting.
I'm not sure they've actually improved the pub. For some reason, I never really liked the pub, but enjoyed meeting up with friends there to watch an important game. So I have no real reason to go there now. They also have young mums with children and buggies in the bar, which puts me off too. I hope they sort the service etc out and are successful. It's not a bad pub, just not for me.

The Goat, Berkhamsted

Possibly the most important pub in Berkhamsted, but not the best pub. There are scores of mostly mediocre places to eat, drink and shop and even a twee cinema, but this is the only place to see live music and long may it continue.

The Alford Arms, Frithsden

Good food, beers and just about everything here. My only gripe is that the restaurant is booked so far in advance. You can turn up and wait for a table in the bar, but it can be hit and miss...and people bring their dogs in too. But it can't be a bad place if the only fault I can find is its own success.

Red Squirrel Brewery Shop, Berkhamsted

Good beer, well priced and well kept. It's good place to drop in after work for a pint and maybe some beer and wine to take home. A vast array of beers and an interesting selection of wines to choose from. It does lack atmosphere and thankfully 'lager-louts', but you are also likely to have to endure other people's children shrieking and running around the small courtyard as you try to enjoy a quiet pint outside, which can be worse. They were actually sitting at the bar last time I visited, so there was no escape. Some parents eh? But apart from that, it's a good idea and worth a visit.

The George, Berkhamsted

Well to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. We hadn't been here for years. Not since the days when you could buy some decent grass and watch the footie. They seem to have outed most of the old clientelle and thank god for that. It's actually quite civilized in there now. The drinks, service and atmosphere were better than most other pubs in Berkhamsted and they seem to have poached some of the Rising Sun regulars seeking refuge from the barking dogs, children and generally odd people that cram themselves into that tiny little place these days.
And I can't blame them.

The Bull, Berkhamsted

God!... This pub's even worse than the Crystal Palace. I've been in there twice. The second time was just because I couldn't believe how awful it was. There was hardly anyone in there, the landlady was sloshed and the place smelt of urine. How do they stay open? Does anyone know?

The Crystal Palace, Berkhamsted

I don't know why this pub is so awful. It's got a lot of potential, but it's wasted.

The Rising Sun, Berkhamsted

A good traditional pub. Well run by Nigel and Mark and easily the best pub in Berkhamsted. A great place to spend summer evenings watching the barges go by. In the winter this tiny pub gets very crowded and can be quite uncomfortable. This is not helped by people bringing their children there, often on Fridays when it it extra-crowded - and there is free food. This is not a 'family pub'...if there is such a thing. Otherwise, faultless.
