The King and Queen, Wendover

I think this is just what a local pub needs to be - it's cosy, clean, friendly, serves excellent well kept beers and great food. Lovely and warm in winter with a real log fire and a interesting mixed bag of clientele at lunchtimes.
I only recently discovered this place having driven past it many times but I cannot recommend it highly enough, just wished I lived a little closer and could make it my local.

The Oak, Aston Clinton

Curry night was a great success, though the curries could have done with being a bit more spicy, both on offer including the Madras were pretty bland.
Good quality meat used though, very tasty, hope they do this more often.
Only saw one couple having a meal off the menu and they left most of their food so maybe the chef has a night off when there is a buffet?
I'm starting to like this pub again, but please please have the chimney swept, when we entered the place was full of wood smoke and both doors were propped open to clear the air, not a problem except for the icy draught round the feet!
Pride still on top form.

The Oak, Aston Clinton

Had dinner in the Oak Friday night a week after it re-opened.
Staff are very pleasant and welcoming, 100% improvement on the last tenants, I've lived in Aston Clinton for many years, but have never been a fan of the Duck and since there is no shortage of nice pubs round here I never used it much.
It looks like at last things are looking up for the Duck, definitely a much nicer atmosphere than I ever found before and quite busy on Friday night.
The menu is typical gastro pub fare, partridge, venison and the like as specials and regular pub grub on the menu. Unfortunately the execution leaves a bit to be desired, luke warm food and cold plates let it down for us, the venison lacked flavour and was bland. London Pride was in excellent form.
Although very friendly the service needs to be ramped up a notch if the Oak is to compete with other recently revamped locals like the Village Gate at Wendover. No salt & pepper on our table and I noticed another table with candle lanterns while others had none.
I think the Oak needs to decide whether its a pub that does food or a restaurant with a bar. As a pub with food it works well, as a restaurant the need to try harder.
I'll certainly be going back though and I encourage others to try it soon and make your own mind up.
