Queens Hotel, Sowerby Bridge

Further to my last comment the pub has changed hands and is on the up again. Under private ownership so it should be protected from the hassles of large pubcos. New licensees Gary and Katy are trying hard with a focus on live bands. Just had their 1st charity weekend 'fest' with 18 bands in 2 days! 3 hand pulled beers in good nick - Taylor's and Moorhouses currently.

The West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury

Excellent real ale pub on Dewsbury staion platform. Berr is always excellent for quality and choice- same ownership as Anglo Dutch Brewery so often some of their beer present. Food is superb value. Also now own the Cellar Bar opposite Batley staion (3 minutes on the train). Can build this into a superb train pub crawl; Leeds, Batley, Dewsbury, Hudddersfield, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Stalybridge (hic), what a good do!!

Big Six, Halifax

Superb little back street local made by knocking together several back to back cottages. Approaching from King Cross towrds the old Infirmary if you look to the left you can see the faint outline of a big '6' on the gable end of the terrace. Owned by Punch but on a 'free of tie' lease so a good selection of real ales in good condition. A classic little time capsule - worth seeking out.

The Moorcock Inn, Norland

Sadly now boarded up after 18 months of totally inept management - another one bites the dust. A great shame as this was one of last proper country local's pubs in the area. Rumour has it that tennants are showing strong interest but as a restaurant.

The Travellers Inn, Hipperholme

Excellent little pub recently tastefully refurbished by Ossett brewery and repeating their successful formulae of 5 Ossett Beers and three rotating SIBA guests. Beer always excellent and just voted CAMRA pub of the season. Well worth a call (hidden on the back road, turn by the camping shop)

The Cavalry Arms, Lindley

Very friendly local. Taylor's landlord in excellent condition on several visits. Service has always been very welcoming.

White Cross Inn, Bradley

Excellent choice and quality of beers and served in a friendly and humorous fashion. Food is also good quality and superb value.

The Head of Steam, Huddersfield

Not a bad pub though I always feel it gets praise beyond it's merit. Beer price, choice and quality is much better at the Railway Station Tavern on the other end of the platform (though surroundings are the other way round!). With so many other excellent Real Ale pubs nearby (Grove, Albert, Star, Rat+Ratchet to mention a few)they need to raise the bar!

The Slubbers Arms, Huddersfield

Now owned by Taylor's (though sporting 1 rotating guest beer) this pub continues to be a little gem in an otherwise fairly dodgy area (Fartown). Beer quality is always excellent as is the selection of very reasonably priced week day lunchtime snacks. Trade seems to be suffering from the corporate witch hunt on lunctime drinking! Please raise your glasses in support! (Best avoided on Huddersfield Town match days - gets overwhelmed).

The Grove Inn, Huddersfield

Superb addition to the Huddersfield Real Ale Trail. Convenient for the bus and train stations. Excellent choice of beer and charming service to boot. Extensive range of foreign bottled beers too (not my cup of tea but will suit some). Interesting cartoon collection too - worth inspecting the walls. Useful information table offering various beer guides and magazines (including Private Eye). A must visit venue.

Barum Top, Halifax

Harsh comments below though possibly fair! Worth a call during the day for a quick pint of predictable beer. Typical JDW house, cheap beer of consistantly slightly above average quality. Plastic food but cheap and you know what you are going to get. Surprised to get to the door on a Saturday night and be deafened by loud music blasting out (so loud I didn't enter). I thought JDW had a no music policy apart from Llyod's No 1 bars??

Queens Hotel, Sowerby Bridge

The last pub which I would recommend in the Village of Ripponden. Recently changed hands and little used by anyone (Lamdlord regularly locks up and goes drinking the Golden Lion next door!!). Admittedly based on 1 visit. No trad beer and no Guiness. Sold my soul to the devil and tried a pint of 'smooth'. Looked vaguely like beer but tasted more like Dettol. Shall not be rushing back

The Moorcock Inn, Norland

Changed hands early 2006 and still finding it's feet. A traditional white country cottage style pub. The bar area remains largely unaltered for many years. The restaurant area has had a make over and has a more contmporary feel. No one chef has been present for long enough to comment on the food! Beer choice varies, usually Sam Smiths (unusual for a free house), Taylor's Landlord and 2 changing guests, often Copper Dragon. Beer quality is consistantly good although often served too cold. There is a strong band of loyal regulars so the craic can be superb!

The Caddy Shack, Elland

I usually score pubs for beer - in this case ) as the new owners have removed the hand pumps! However the food menu is superb with excellent value tapas dishes available week days. It is a noisy atmosphere with multiple televisions showing either sport or music channels. Crap if you are a beer drinker but a superb and convenient stop off point for a quick meal.

The Lower Royal George, Scammonden

I visit this pub several times a week. It is an increasingly rare example of a family run country eating house. Steve and Margaret will be celebrating 25 years here in 2007. There is always Stones Bitter (not my personal favourite but well kept) and a rotating guest bitter, usually 4 - 4.5%abv. (Well's Bombardier, Copper Dragon, Spitfire, Rev James, H+H etc). The beer moves quickly and is always in excellent condition. The excellent food is all home coooked by Margaret and is renowned for being enormous portions of simple traditional fayre at very reasonable prices. This is evident by the quantity of repeat business from regular customers. The pub itself is definately more of a Country Eating House but drinkers are very welcome. Boooking is recommended especially at week ends.
