Unicorn Inn, Canterbury

I think if you wanted to show someone visiting the country what a British pub was like then this could well be the place to take them. Warm, welcoming and well decorated. Even on a Saturday night when you have to dodge your way through the fights on main street, this place has a friendly and peaceful atmosphere. I would like to see a more imaginative ale list - I'm not really looking for London and Cornish beers in Canterbury but the Master Brew was well kept and tasty at least.

The Lincoln Arms Hotel, Dorking

Unfortunately a bit of a dive. Full of England flags (you wonder which corner the EDL recruiting office might be hiding in). Lots of football and lads drinking Jaegermeister and Red Bull.

Shame, because it's also the closest pub to the Surrey Hills brewery and did do a good pint of Shere Drop but it's not going to make the Good Beer Guide any time soon.

The King William IV, Mickleham

I would review this pub, but as they had decided to close for the day when I turned up on Sunday, I can't. No wonder so many pubs are closing when they can't even be bothered to open the doors.

The Cricketers, Horsell

Seems to be mostly focused on the restaurant side of the business than just being a pub, but having said that the beer seems to be in excellent condition - much better than the Good Beer Guide listed Crown just down the road. Nice beer gardens for sunny days too.

The Crown, Horsell

I visited this pub on the basis that it was in the Good Beer Guide so should be able to provide a good pint. Unfortunately, for some reason they decided to use a sparkler. If I wanted something bland and tasteless I'd ask for Budweiser. Really, the minimum you expect from a GBG pub is that they don't remove all the flavour from your beer without asking you first. If it's quality beer you want, try the Cricketers just down the road - had an excellent beer there earlier in the day.

The Old Jail, Cudham

Wonderful little country pub, all low beams and traditional decor. I had a couple of great pints of Harvey's Sussex while walking around the area. Like many of the pubs in the area it's a bit of a regular's haunt where everyone seems to know each other, but it's a good atmosphere. I'll have to return for lunch here soon.

The Black Horse, Biggin Hill

Rudest bar staff ever. Despite the fact that it wasn't very busy the barman completely refused to acknowledge my presence at the bar and continued doing other things while I stood there holding money. Then, a regular came in and another guy (probably the landlord) went behind the bar to serve him, also ignoring me despite the fact that he'd seen me standing there for five minutes. At this point my wife and I walked out,

Clearly this is a regulars pub which resents anyone else barging into their little club. Give it a wide berth.

The Crooked Billet, Wimbledon Common

Just to mention that the manager has changed recently and I have certainly found nothing to complain about in the times I've been there since. The new manager - Duncan - and the staff he brought with him have always been good.

The Wibbas Down Inn, Wimbledon

A bit of a mixed view about this pub. On the plus side the range of real ales can't be beaten anywhere else in Wimbledon. At busier times they often have a different ale on each of the 18 (!!) handpumps. Visiting yesterday they had six Xmas ales alone on.

On the minus side, the food is nothing special (though good value for money). The pub is packed with teenies on Friday and Saturday nights and the toilets transform to natural wetlands by about 9pm. The rest of the week this place is well worth a visit though.

The Nags Head, Belgravia

What can I say - good beer, nutcase staff. The CAMRA good beer guide listed this place so I popped in for a quick drink to check it out. I tried the Broadside which was in good condition, but while I was drinking and reading the good beer guide comments on my phone I was berated by an old guy who I think was the landlord for using a phone in the pub. I pointed out I wasn't using it for conversation and wasn't making any noise, simply using the internet but he got even more irate and started rambling about wanting to keep the pub in the 1950's. I drank up and left.

There are plenty of other pubs in the area with good beer which don't have oddball owners to ruin the visit for you. Visit them instead.
