The Horse and Groom, Twyford

Well worth a visit. It made the 2011 Good Beer Guide and continues to maintain a good standard of ales. It's not a wheelchair friendly place if you want to venture to the lower bar area - or the toilets.

Courage Best and London Pride are the regular beers with one or sometimes two guests - usually from local breweries.

The Eldon Arms, Reading

Excellent two-bar pub a 100 yards off the Kings Road (A4) in Reading. The Pint Size Mild is excellent, but not always on.

The Brewery Tap, Sudbury

Excellent pub! Found it from the CAMRA Good Beer Guide while in the area and went back the following weekend for their Beer Festival - not that there wasn't enough choice for most people on the first visit.

They don't normally do food, but if you bring in food or order a take-away to be delivered, they will provide plates and cutlery. They have 4-pint take-away beer containers too.

There's no car park, but we managed to park up the deadend road beside it on both occasions. Staff are friendly, helpful and know about their beers.

The George, Hintlesham

We visited this pub recently whilst on holiday in Suffolk. It was chosen by some relatives who live in the area as a convenient place to meet for a meal.

They offered three standard beers on handpump. The Young's Bitter I had was OK but not outstanding. The food was good standard pub grub, reasonably priced - a good place to eat rather than dine.

We met there on a Tuesday October night and found it pretty quiet with two other tables in use in the restaurant area and only a handfull of people in the bar. When we returned from the restaurant into the bar around 10 p.m., the bar emptied leaving traces of cigarette smoke behind.

No complaints about the staff - they were friendly and helpful.

The Star, Caversham

News is that the new brewery in Caversham - Two Bridges - is supplying their Golden Cygnet beer. A couple of 2nd hand reports say the beer quality is good.

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge

A group of us waited outside on a Saturday morning for the pub to open. A local also waiting said that they didn't always open one time - they were 1 minute late. An excellent choice of beers all in first-class condition.

The Inn on the Park, Woodley

If you are going to drink in a pub that is part of a leisure centre, you don't expect oak beams and leaded windows. Even so, the furniture is rather more appropriate for a cafe than a pub. That said, the cask ale is generally good. It's served on gravity out the back - the handpumps are to tell you what's on.

Nags Head, Reading

This must be one of the best pubs anywhere - and in the try before you die category.

The Toby Carvery, Lower Earley

No better or worse than you'd except - clean, bright, large open plan bar where most people are only there for the food. The beer is Greene King IPA and I had no problems with quick half I had. At 2.40 a pint it's reasonably priced.

Seven Red Roses, Lower Earley

The new manager seems to be working his socks off to get the best from this community pub. The London Pride was in good form and he hopes to add a guest beer to the other hand-pump. Worth calling into.

The Magpie and Parrot, Shinfield

A wonderful example of an English pub, the beer is superb. This is a must-visit venue if you are in the area.

The Queen Victoria, Hare Hatch

Lovely little pub a few yards north off the A4. Good food and good beer.

The Seven Stars, Knowl Hill

Stop watching and call in! Yes, the promise of last April's visit has matured. It's one of the best pints of Brakspears around. This is not your standard rao-house, there's quite a community feel at this pub on the A4 between Reading and Maidenhead. The Maidenhead Folk club meets there on Thursday evenings.

The Roebuck, Reading

Unfortunately, the Thai food speciality is no more. The Roebuck has been through a couple of changes of manager recently. Mike, the current manager leaves at the end of February. He expects that the incoming manager will continue to keep three real ales going - Greene King IPA, Abbot and either Moreland Bitter or a GK Seasonal.
