The Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Mytholmroyd

Interesting place. It had an overwhelming smell of fried things when I visited but the beer was great. Landlord and Black Sheep seem to be standard and they were also serving Cragg Vale Bitter (Little Valley Brewery) and Golden Salamander. I hear it does good, cheap food and the pub quiz can be a little "local" in terms of if you are allowed to win or not. I'm plucking up the courage to go back when it might be busy.

The Cock and Bottle, Bradford

I hear this place has now closed. Anyone know anything more?

The Maltings, York

Excellent beer on a hot afternoon. A good mix of locals and foreign tourists, all drinking the real ale. The man on the next table rated the chilli as "Take your head off" and his chips looked yummy. They sell a lot of fruit wine although I've never seen anyone actually drinking it. Check out the doors on the ceiling...

The Malt Shovel, Harden

Excellent beer garden, shockingly low selection of beer.

The Cock and Bottle, Bradford

13 Real Ales, little rooms with doors so you can have a conversation, even the "disco" and tv don't intrude. Recommended.

The Fighting Cock, Bradford

A proper "spit and sawdust" pub with a massive range of Real Ale and fantastic food (made in the bar and sold very very cheaply). It was busy at lunchtime with people who work locally (car salesmen especially) but it quietened down over the afternoon. There did seem to be a few regulars popping in for a pint with their dog but they were friendly enough. Worth a visit.

The Victoria Hotel, Leeds

Updating... We visited the Vic last night and I'm pleased to report that the beer was still good, the service fine and the pub mostly empty by 7pm. Phew.

The Original Oak, Headingley

I've seen people climbing over the 8 foot garden wall to get into this place during the warmer months (and so avoid the bouncers...) I can't see that it's really worth it and the place seems to be a haven for Otley Runners and p*ssed up students.

Avoid (if you're looking for Real Ale and somewhere relaxing to be)

The Victoria Hotel, Leeds

Used to be a great place to go and drink, with a huge non-smoking room and Bridgets Bar (free for parties). It got extremely busy for an hour or so when the hospital/banks finished work. I hear that it has a new landlord and consequently the quality of the beer has taken a tumble and it takes even longer to get served at the bar. Anyone been recently?

The Albion Bistro, Rochdale

A great place to try lots of different real ales. I've had everything from the Phoenix Brewery (Heywood) to Landlord here. I've never tried the restaurant but I hear it's excellent and serves a lot of South African dishes.

The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale Head

I love this place! I've been coming at least once a year for the past four years, at first to use the hotel as a base for walking and now mainly for the food and the beer. The food from the bar is generously portioned (although somehow you manage to eat it all after a hard day's walking) and eating in the restaurant is a real treat. Now that they've got the Great Gable Brewery going I just wish I could spend my time there working my way along the bar! Make time to stay and experience breakfast... The rooms are fairly small and the showers used to give out hot and cold water at random (book a room with a massive bath instead). I never have enough time to spend in this lovely part of the world and the hospitality at the Inn will keep me coming back for more.

The Anchor Tap, Tower Bridge

We also found it to be a fairly unwelcoming pub. The outside implied a traditional real ale pub but the selection was poor (this was May 2005 so it may have improved...), food menu uninspiring and the locals worrying!

The Mudlark, London Bridge

A great place to drop into after a hard days touristing. I found it by accident when the Barrowboy and Banker was closed. I've spent many a happy hour sat outside in the late May sunshine and last winter we came in after our division 2 football side had been beaten by Charlton. The barman was great and seems up for a chat with anyone who will spare the time. It remains on my list of pubs to pop in when in London - I'll be back!

The Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge

I've only managed to make it into this pub a couple of times when visiting London - it always seems to be closed at times I'd expect it to be open (Saturday early-evening for example). Last summer I had a fine pint of "Discovery" at ouchy-London-prices. I rather liked the glass but I was too chicken to pocket it!

Fanny's Ale And Cider House, Saltaire

I've often whiled away a few hours with colleages, sitting upstairs at this fine establishment. The beer is great, I love the wide selection and we've never had a "bad" pint. There's a handy car park next door if you've the driver...

The Boltmakers Arms, Keighley

We occasionally have our "work outings" here (if you see a massive group of teachers drinking in the late afternoon - that's probably us). The beer is excellent and the locals never seem to mind us moving in. I wish I culd get Landlord this good in Leeds.

The Angel Inn, Leeds

Great range of beer at excellently low prices. As a non-smoker, finding a place to sit and not be in a fugg can be a problem, especially when the aircon blows the smoke from one room into the non-smoking area!

The Adelphi, Leeds

I love the decor in this little pub - a good mix of old and new. The only criticism I have is the price of a pint - ouch!

Arcadia Ale and Wine Bar, Headingley

The real ale here is great - a wide selection that is usually kept well. Unfortunately the pub is now far too popular with passing Otley Runners and discerning students and gets horribly busy from about 8pm until closing on Friday and Saturday nights. The lack of soft furnishings means that what was once a hubbub of conversation has become far too loud. Beware the aircon - it's usually boiling hot upstairs and freezing cold downstairs. Some of the bar staff are excellent and pull a lovely pint, with some all you get is a long queue and a pint of head. I've been going to the pub since it opened and I had great hopes of it becoming my "local" - I love the idea of no music and no smoking. I wonder if they can make it bigger?
