The Londesborough, Stoke Newington

Michelin Stars...

Cleary this user has never been to a Michelin Starred Restaurant. You'd be looking at a lot more than 16 for a main.

What some pub-goers don't realise is that the hospitality industry is very transient and managers, chefs and staff move jobs, hence inconsistency in service and food quality.

I quite like the Londesborough, it was one of the first pubs I drank in in Stoke Newington when i moved there in 02. Good pub, even though I rather ridiculously got asked to leave after Stoke Fest last summer. Apparently being a bar-maid's ex-boyfriend is a legitimate reason to refuse service...

The Birdcage, Stoke Newington

I do believe the Cage is returning to its glory days. Hurrah! The colour is getting better bit by bit. The drinks are great, the staff are friendly. Bit of a shame if you forget it's quiz night, stumble in and were wanting a chat, but that's the luck of the draw I guess. What's this: a lock on the toilet door, a mirror in the Gents? Hand dryer is still crap though. i'm currently out of town and can't wait to get back for a few xmas drinks or ten.

The Woodbine, Highbury

They are now doing roasts on Sunday, and they did this bank holiday Monday too. A round 10 quid for one of three roasts, Rib of beef, organic corn fed chook, and I assume it was loin of pork, but could've been lamb, can't remember. Proper portions, proper gravy (jus?)Tasty and worth every penny, friendly service from the waiteress too,

The Retreat, Islington

Is now called Kinky Mambo. Never has a queue outside because it doesn't attract the kind of insipid proles that places like the Living room attract. Friday's and Saturdays, it's packed inside with great DJ. Tues and Sun see's live jazz/cabaret acts. other nights are quieter but a great place for a proper cocktail and low lights. Always good quality music-no R+B etc. The door men are really friendly as are the staff. The cocktails are dangerous though, very strong, but therefore good value!

The Spurstowe Arms, Hackney

What's wrong with 9 quid for a burger? It costs 5 quid in McD's, at least this one has a substantial ammount of meat in it, is home-made, and actually has traces of red meat in it. And the chips are massive. And decent salad. And you can have a pint at the same time. All round worth the 4 quid any day. If you want rubbish food, go to Tenessee Chicken
