After leaving the Gardener's Arms in Plantation Road, our next stop in Oxford was the Gardener's Arms in North Parade Avenue. Just 6 minutes walk separates them. So, they're most likely to be the two closest Gardener's Arms in the country! This particular one is a Greene King pub run by a couple of longstanding owners. It genuinely feels like stepping into somebody's house and also a step back in time. The downside was that the ale range was limited. Greene King The Gardener's Arms Finest Ale was supplemented by Belhaven/Saltaire CCC & Thwaite's Wainwright. Not as good as the previous Gardener's Arms.

The ale (Wainwrights now by Marstons I believe) wasn't great but found this to be a genuine pub unlike the R & C across the road.

Great little unspoilt pub with a warm atmosphere, run by a hard working couple. A lovely menu of home-cooked food (no chips in sight - makes a pleasant change!) and well - kept beer. No nonsense, nothing fancy, just a nice little pub :)

I went to the Gardeners Arms with some friends early one Saturday evening. The bar staff (landlord and landlady perhaps) were rude from the off, making disparaging remarks about us, even though we were paying customers. The food wasn't very nice at all and overpriced for what it was.

A good counterpart to the Rose and Crown across the road and its namesake pub, The Gardeners Arms nearby in Jericho. Oxford probably needs more of this - a no nonsense, unspoilt, boozer that's welcoming and solidly working class with its comfortable fawn sofas, Sahara nuts machines and general air of 'we don't care about trendies'.
