I have been going to abv/The R Bar for many years, for almost daily lunches when working in Esher, and fairly regularly since working in London.

It was always my favourite bar to go to, the owners and the staff were friendly, welcoming, attentive and geniunely interested in us! The best thing was that they didn't seem to mind that we were slightly (ahem) less sophisticated than the usual Esher crowd!

However, I went back, after not having been for a few months, a couple of weeks ago and everything had changed. The place was empty, the staff didn't seem to care if we were there or not and the atmosphere just wasn't right. I don't know what has happened, I have heard they are under new management, whatever it is I am not happy and am now thinking about taking my custom to the Bear.

I have given a score of 8 for the sake of posterity, and in the hope that my recent experience was a one off!

Renamed the R Bar sometime ago now and streets better than ABV. Great atmosphere and different from all the pubs in Esher. Fabulous at the weekend and really busy but still good in the week. Lovely staff especially the owners, and great tapas style food for a lite bite.

Nice bar, makes a change in esher. The new owner is a nice guy who tries very hard. Shame about the chelsea boyz though selecting the cream of the girls for a good roasting session after the game

Abv is a very trendy bar, which is why the Chelsea boys frequent it, the food is excellent and the cocktails are stunningly pretentious, the ladies are of a relatively high standard too!

ABV was taken over by St John and his lovely wife Michelle. They have made some significant changes - the wine list is much enhanced and the food is excellent, and I believe the layout is changing too. Try it for Saturday lunch too.
