This is an astonishingly good little pub. Quite a surprise! Hidden in a back street, it offers excellently kept beer, very competent staff and a wonderful atmosphere. Food exists alongside the pub, rather than its focus. (It's a burger operation based in the *garden* which means the place doesn't stink of food!) Occasional music is usually very good. There's a regularly changing art display.
The customers all seem friendly and interesting; your dogs are welcome; there's usually something happening and it feels like a pub should be ~ nicely eclectic, warm, clean and safe.
I really like it.

What a great little gem of a pub.
i had never been there before but i had a genuine friendly welcome from the rather attractive landlady
called Vanessa [i blushed] It has a great cosy feel to the pub and the food and drink [they do a tapas menu] were great. Despite geting ready for a music evening the staff still found time to be friendly and the live band [a crazy jazz combo but good fun] turned a quiet night out into quite something. i am new to deal but have found my local!

Brilliant little Shepherd Neame pub. I had a lovely pint of orangeboom, served by the best looking woman I have ver seen, on the start of a pub crawl with 5 of my mates.

Only stayed for one, but it seemed like a very decent pub all in all.....

i dont know if i was in a differant pub to the one everyone above has been to but have not been made very welcome by Chris or Jeff.
chris always seems to have a face like thunder to anyone who isnt a local and often gives you a dirty look if you are waitign to be served and she has to drag her self away from conversing with a regular punter. i get the feeling that unless your a proper local (born in deal) or frequent the Deal Hoy at least twice a week, for at least the next 2 years then your not worth a smile.
Also make sure you count your change and know how much your round actualy costs.
went in at the weekend and my first round cost 7.40
male member of staff short changed me almost a pound from a tenner in 10p's & 20p's, lucky i checked.
Then when my mate got the second round in identical round same barman, charged 6.60 ??
BEWARE.
