user reviews of the Melbourne Arms, Melbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Just visited the Melbourne Arms today for a soft drink and some lunch on a walk along Pocklington Canal. Seems like a lovely place, busy and popular on a Sunday for lunches, and serving a couple of real ales. Our food was very nice, we sat out the front and enjoyed the sun. I would recommend a visit.

The Melbourne Arms at the moment is still trading, though there are plans for it to change use in the future. It would be a shame as it's a nice old pub with a pleasant, traditional interior and a nice, large beer garden to the rear/side with play equipment for kids. It's next to a couple of (fairly) busy roads but when we went the other day we noticed that you can't actually see the cars because of the hedge.
Not as trendy as, say, Harpurs, and not as central in Melbourne but a nice pub so I hope it can be made viable. The ale I tried wasn't in great nick, I guess that is due to low turnover.
ps. They do curries, but I didn't sample that.

Now called Harpurs. Emphasis is on food, which is very good. But confusing menus promising pizzas (which they only serve on Mondays, of all days! - Why? I like pizza on other days of the week.)
Good beer selection and live music on a Friday if you like that sort of thing. The layout is not great as it seems to encourage that bane of a drinkers life - the bar hogger. Just what you don't want to see when you walk through the door is your path to the bar effectively blocked off by a wall of grinning idiots.
