user reviews of the Castle Arms, Edinburgh

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Beer was good - I had a perfect Stewarts Edinburgh Gold. Unlike quite a few pubs in the City, this allows families in for food - so rather packed with kids eating at 9pm on a weekday. I would like this if with my family, less so when out for a pint.

Great terrace down the metal stairs overlooking West Bow.

Decent enough pub.

Whilst not finding it to be as atrocious as the last reviewer, there's little doubt that this is a pub coasting along courtesy of its closeness to the castle and captive cattle market audience. I remembered it from previous visits and knew it panders to the tourist trade, but unfortunately we needed a food fix and so batoned down our wallets and hoped for the best. The menu suggests a half-decent cafe but really it's bog-standard pub grub, which was passable 30 years ago but not today. Basic burger and salad etc etc. Too boring to describe, although predictably the prices suggested that one should be writing home to proclaim how marvellous it was. I suppose daft Americans and so on don't know it's not authentic 'Scotch' fare and eat in ignorance, happy to pay as they have more money than sense. Lambs to the slaughter, but that's business. It could've been worse. Actually, ale-wise things were somewhat better. Can't recall the brew as nothing unusual, but it was served satisfactorily and was in okay form. Once we got the mainly Polish staff to understand! Passable, but a wasted opportunity given its position, where a pricey but higher-quality venue could thrive.

Poor real ale selection considering it's location. The Caledonian was disgustingly off and Deuchars was far too warm at about 22C. Bar staff foreigners which seems typical for tourist locations in the UK but really is crap for atmosphere. Food poor. Give this a miss if you care about real ales because the quality of theirs suggests they don't. Probably the worst pub I went to in the UK in 4 weeks.

Semi-traditional pub in tourist central, a stone's throw from Edinburgh castle.
It's bright and airy, with whitewashed walls and a mixture of traditional seating and sofas. One long bar room spills out onto a terrace at the rear with fine views of the Grassmarket. As well as this room there is a snug immediately to the left as you enter with a cosy fire. Food plays a substantial role in the operation. Beer wise, there's the ubiquitous Deuchars and also Theakston's XB- not a great choice compared to its neighbours, however the Deuchars was pretty good.
Aimed at tourists but possibly less so than some of the pubs further down the Royal Mile. Quite enjoyed it but may give it a miss next time, if only due to the number of excellent pubs nearby.
