user reviews of the Gryphon, Grange Park

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I dont see why these shouldnt be included on the site where applicable, as so many of them are as much a pub as they are an eatery. Of course there are plenty of examples of particular locations just being eateries, but then I assume they won't be added to this site.

Having said that, Im still not entirely sure whether this really qualifies as a pub, as it has a definite feel of a bar waiting area. In all the Harvesters I have used around the UK, you can always identify people who have just gone there to drink. Whereas here, people who are coming here specifically to have a drink are very few and far between. But taking it for what it is, the staff are always more than pleasant and although there may often be quite a wait for service, due to them covering tables at busy periods, the service always seems to make up for it.

The garden area and car park are always going to make it an attractive proposition for passing trade, but as a pub, unfortunately, it has taken on the burden of being identified as a Harvester, a place to go and eat, rather than a place to go and drink.

Agree with previous reviewer that this pub has the potential to be so much better, if only it wasn't part of the Harvester chain. The salad bar separates the two ends of the pub, creating a bottleneck in between. Service is quite good and the food is nothing to conmplain about, but it looks more like a restuarant than a pub and lacks the ambience that good pubs have.

There is a train of thought that Harvesters should not be included on this site because they are more restaurant than pub.
However I think it is important The Gryphon is included here because
A) It is an establishment in the N21 area which serves beer , just not very good beer.
B) One day the good people at Mitchells & Butlers may turn it back into a decent local pub like it used to be in my early drinking days.
As well as the large partitioned Harvester style dining area, there is a small bar area equipped with comfortable sofa style seating and even a fruit machine to try and recreate that real pub effect. Unfortunately it comes up short in that, like most other types of this chain, there is no real ale and Tetleys and Speckled Hen on Keg is as good as it gets, and it is a place to be avoided on a Saturday and Sunday as it then becomes overrun with families waiting for a table in the restaurant section.
As a Harvester restaurant, its actually quite a good one as far as food quality and service goes and I used it several times before the kids became old enough to realise that a trip to a Harvester really wasnt the exotic treat we made it out to be when they were little.
But as a pub, the local residents of Grange Park really do deserve something better, like they had in the early 80s before some Brewery twonk decided to change the solid local pub which was The Gryphon into a Harvester.
