user reviews of Stone House Inn, Harrogate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The address allocated to the pub makes it sound like it is in a suburb of Harrogate. But it's actually in the middle of nowhere, where sheep outnumber people by about 100 to 1 and pheasants very much have the upper hand too! We were the only customers here on Saturday evening, after a brief diversion off our Yorkshire crawl to pay a visit to Sunderland. Only 1 ale was on - Golden Sheep. The keg cider was Thatchers Gold. It was getting a bit chilly outside. So the wood burner was welcome. There is a full-size snooker table in one corner of the pub and as we left, a couple of people entered and made a beeline for the table. I often wonder how pubs like this survive. With no customers at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening, it must be a struggle. But good luck to the owners.

The Stone House Inn re-opened in April of this year (2011) after being closed for 18 months. The pub is fairly isolated, situated as it is high up on the edge of moorland around 10-12 miles west of Harrogate but close to Thruscross reservoir . The interior is very clean, but quite austere and spartan - the name of the pub is appropriate ! Well-kept Black Sheep beers are served but no food at the moment. It is owned and run by a local family on a seemingly low-key basis and is not particularly well-frequented but there are seats outside with good views if the weather is fine. A pub of great history and character and well worth a visit.

Isolated but popular food led pub on the moors above the Washburn Valley close to the A59. Stone exterior and exposed stone and dark wood interior. Large U shaped bar with plenty of seating and tables plus a more formal dining room to one side. Reasonably kept Timothy Taylors Best Bitter and Landlord, a beer from Daleside and a packaged beer range of Fosters, Stella, Guinness, John Smiths Smooth, etc. Appeals largely to middle England diners from nearby Harrogate.
