user reviews of Old Pear Tree, Wigan

A pretty poor pub. Has little character inside and the real ale is also long gone. I'm not sure it will survive much longer given its location.

My Partner and I decided, for a change, to pop into Wigan to try a few different pubs. We saw this one and, from the outside, it looked quite good. We went in only to be met by a stale horrible smell from the pub itself and rap music blaring at 5pm on a Friday afternoon.

Hoping things could improve the barmaid stood chatting on her phone as customers waited to be served. When she spotted customers waiting she carried on talking on her phone, eventually wandering down the bar, took a drink and food order from one customer and put the order through the till whilst still chatting on her phone. She continued talking on the phone when she returned with the customers change. Not once did it occur to her to put her phone down and provide a proper service to paying customers. We walked out.

The Old Pear Tree is a Marstons pub that gets very popular on Wigan matchdays. It is not too far from the town centre, bus station and railway stations. From my somewhat addled memory, there were 3 ales on and all were from the Marstons range. The swift half I had was perfectly acceptable. The pub interior seemed fairly welcoming. But I think there are better choices in the vicinity.

This was once a CAMRA regular noted for its fine ales and good food. However, it let its standards slip somewhat during the last five years, resulting in a period of closure. The good news is that it is up and running again and looking good. It has been refurbished whilst maintaining its cosy atmosphere under the low roof, with the main bar and a vault There are currently 3 or 4 ales to choose from. Hope this place can return to its glory days soon.
