user reviews of the Hare and Hounds, Staxton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After 2 days in York it was time to move on. On our way to Scarborough, this pub couldn't be easier to find as its right on the A64 and the perfect place for a quick stop.

4 pumps that had 2 ales on , these were Caledonian Flying Scotsman & Wold Top Mallard. I went for half of Mallard, very drinkable indeed.

Collection of beer and whiskey jugs hang above the bar.

2 other punters in who were obviously locals, the pub dog Adam was wandering around looking for food.

As I say just a quick pit stop but worth the stop nonetheless

Lovely little pub, Landlord, Landlady & locals were really friendly. The food was good (spanking mixed grill), reasonably priced & served promptly. Fresh seafood was on the menu (Scampi & Lobster).
Dogs are allowed in the bar but obviously not in the restaurant. Our dog even got a healthy treat to chew on. there is a little grassed seating area outside, which is quite nice as long as the traffics not too heavy.
Some one mentioned the carpets in a reveiw on another site, they have probably been changed as they looked reasonably new to us.
Overall a good experience & we would go back again.

5 colleagues and I stopped at this pub on Thursday 24 May. The pub looked great outside and was an ideal location before a work meeting at 1400 in Staxton Wold. We arrived at around 1225 and wanted some food before our meeting which started at 1400 and was about 2 miles away. We all ordered food around 1235. 2 of us were having hot baguettes the others cold sandwiches. We waited 40 minutes so I then went into the pub from the garden to ask how much longer it would be.

The barman told me 5-10 minutes. We waited another 15 minutes and the food had still not arrived. We were all worried because we had a 1400 meeting. I went into the pub again to hear the barman and a young woman's voice swearing and arguing in what must have been the kitchen. The language was absolutely disgraceful. When the barman re-appeared I said that we could not wait any longer than the hour we had so could we we have a refund. He could not authorise this so a young woman appeared. After speaking for a few minutes I could tell it was her that had been arguing and swearing beforehand. When I asked her about the refund she categorically refused to even consider the idea. She said that the bottom of the menu clearly stated that if you were in a rush you had to tell the staff. An hour earlier we were not in a rush but now we were. She also mentioned that she had been looking for our table for over 20 minutes and the food was ready. This was quite a poor excuse as the pub is not that big! Her general attitude was something that I have never experienced before and would not want to again. Such was her attitude that 2 other couples left the inside of the pub.

We later gathered that this woman was looking after the pub for her parents that were away. It goes without saying that we will never visit this pub again. Over the next 18 months myself and at least 30 colleagues will be working in the Staxton Wold area. None of these people will enter this pub. NO Customer service, rude staff and owners daugher with a disgusting swearing tongue.

AVOID THIS PUB LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Blimey can't believe there are no reviews for this fine place . Its in the good beer guide. 6 local brews on at the time of my visit. Tried 2 copper dragons but was well impressed with the Wold Top Brewery A4 amber. I didn't have room to fit in another Wold top beer, Big sky bitter, because the food at the hare and hounds is top notch as well, big portions, good prices.
