The Hatchet was the only one of the town's Wetherspoons I was planning to visit. But in the end, I visited both and this was easily the better one. It has a fairly cramped bar area. But there was sufficient seating, despite it being fairly busy last night. The ales were Greene King Abbot, Wild Weather Christmas At The Weathers, Lymestone Stone Cold, Exmoor Exmas, Adnams Yuletide & Ruddles Best. Ciders were Orchard Pig Juggler & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. I tried the Wild Weather beer which was a disappointing mild. Lively place though.

Overpriced and has successfully imported the dubious regulars/chav brigade from the old Hatchet days. Avoid unless you like starring in your own episode of Shameless. There was even a fellow with a ferret in his pocket; not sure how that got past the bar staff although some of them were clearly sampling their own wares!

First rate Whetherspoons pub (not an expression you often hear). The beer's well kept and the food seems popular. Far better all round than the other 'spoons in town (The Diamond Tap).

Now open as The Hatchet Inn (Wetherspoons) with B&B available. It is only about a 3 minute walk from their other pub in town (The Diamond Tap) so they must be trying to corner all the trade in Newbury. Usual Wetherspoons offerings with locally themed bric-a-brac; a patio and a grand mix of furniture. The standard range of beers with a very disappointing guest ale range though I was told that they had Loddon beers on and they had sold out very quickly (then get some more in!!!). It was market day in town and this is a decent place to sit and watch the goings-on at the stalls! Nuff said.

Not a very nice place. When it was the Berkshire Tavern it was full of scallies. Very cheap drink prices but you get what you pay for, naff surroundings and company.
Opening this summer as another poxy Wetherspoons place, hopefully all the grotty people will either go here or the diamond tap and leave us somewhere decent.
