user reviews of Shrubbery Cottage, Stourbridge

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Noticed on the Holdens Web Site that they have a number of tied pubs around the Black Country. Got to be worth an explore, hasn't it.

Popped into this one at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night. Quite busy with people having a pint after work. Typical suburban pub - the only frills were a bar mounted hot nut machine :-).

I've only ever seen Golden Glow before, this place had that and two other s - a bitter and a special. I went for the latter. It is better than Golden Glow.

My journey will continue :-)

This is a fairly ordinary modern suburban pub, boosted considerably by belonging to the Holden's estate. The beer is as good as you'd expect from them and I'd be happy to have it as my local. It's clean, tidy and lacking character; it's a bog-standard local in all aspects except the beer.

Good pint of Holdens Special and shows football on TV screens.

Having last visited The Shrub about 20 years ago I was really looking forward to seeing it again on a recent visit to Oldswinford, especially when I read it was a Holden's pub.
Unfortunately the refurbishment has left is strangely soulless and although they do sell 3 Holden's beers the Golden Glow, normally one of my faves, was far from the best I've tried.

I visited this pub while doing a Stourbridge crawl in April 07 as it was in the 2007 Good Beer Guide. I was there before opening time so sat out in the pleasant garden that had been a putting green as the markings were still on the lawn. Enjoyed my Holdens bitter.
