user reviews of the Roundhouse, Canterbury

This place hasn't been open as a pub since around 2005, I think.

We bought the building in 2009. It had been closed up and had been for sale for ages. Someone else bought it off the pubco and got permission to chop the building into flats. Then gave up, and put it up for sale again in late 2008, and we bought it in spring 2009.

Nothing "funny" was going on - when we bought it, we could have done anything we wanted with the building. We have made it into a big student house-share.

And FYI - it is nowhere near the "oldest pub in Canterbury". Was built as the Station Hotel around the time that Canterbury East railway station opened (1860). There are pubs in Canterbury that are wayyy older than this one.

This pub was great when the right people were running it and could have been again. This was the ultimate unique pub and I have travelled most of the world and have constantly compared any pub to The Roundhouse in it's glory days.

I am disgusted that it is now beeing turned into student accommodation when it was one of the oldest pubs in Canterbury...what ever happened to retaining our history.

Private buyers did try to purchase the property from the owners but the sale was refused as they wanted to sell purely to developers. Price was no issue, just the future use of the building.

Something funny going on here!!
