user reviews of the George and Dragon Inn, Garrigill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub has now re-opened and is definitely worth a visit. We recently moved to Alston and the George & Dragon is our new 'local'. It's got everything a good pub should have - great beer, roaring fires, friendly owners, chatty regulars and cute dogs.

They're only serving snackier food at the moment, but are on the look-out for a chef. So proper pub grub and Sunday roasties will be coming soon.

Well worth a visit, and this is coming from proper country pub lovers.

Lovely place. Stayed within staggering distance of the George and Dragon on our C2C ride this week. An unfussy, unpretentious pub in a quiet idyllic location with a few benches out front as you look across Garrigill's green village centre. Well kept ale (the Allendale Golden Plover was particularly fine for a summer evening) and down to earth tasty pub grub at reasonable prices. They don't take cards, but that's no big deal in such a rural area; you shouldn't expect it.

The icing on the cake for me was a friendly local bloke giving us plenty of good advice for future off-road biking in the area. Will definitely be returning when the opportunity arises. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone doing the C2C or walking the Pennine Way. (And I should add that there's a cheap - if slightly idiosyncratic - B&B just two doors down at The Old Post Office.)

Pleasant village local with two beers from Allendale and also Black Sheep Bitter. Reasonable pub food. Friendly locals roped us in to the quiz and the two of us were easily beaten by a team of seven. They don't exactly play fair around here.

The pub was closed last year but local support fortunately brought it back to life.

This one's a cracker, surprised I'm the first to suggest it. Unspoilt old pub on village green, nothing's changed much for years. Nice range of beers, Black Sheep etc and food OK. Only drawback, as we found to our dismay after walking about ten very hot miles is that it's shut on Tuesday afternoons. We tried again the next night and they were soon forgiven.
