First time there and i and 8 friends stayed there for one night as we were playing golf at toot hill, all i can say is what a place wish we had one in our village, everything about this place was 10/10 ,the food was the best pub food i have seen in a very long time , the landlord and his wife were so nice words cant explain and the rooms were great , cant wait to go back there also as we were leaving thenext morning to play golf the landlord gave us 2 boxex of golf balls , what a gent its nice to know your not just a pound note , we will do our best to tell people about this proper pub .

Have visited Black Bull many times over the years and like all country pubs that want to survive, it's had to go for the eating customer; and it does it quite well.. It's mainly restaurant but still retains a cosy bar feel, and there are real ales on draft
We've found food to be pretty good, though at busy times the veg can turn up either tired or luke-warm, or both. Portions are always generous. The pub has a reputation for fish and we've always found it to be very good.

On one visit, people at the table next to ours called the waitress to point out a slug in some salad. The waitresses response was "oh yes there is isn't there" she took the plate away and returned a minute or two later with same plate minus the slug. There was no acknowledgement or apology from anyone and I suggested to the customers that they should at least request a discount or free bottle of wine but no offer was made and they didn't ask.

We've sometimea found the staff a little inexperienced, but always friendly and willing.

I'd recommend it as a good pub serving good food, but do remember it's not a West End restaurant !

I don't want to dispute the last reviewer's experience as I don't know what happened. But I would like to say that we have known the landlord for a number of years and I'm sure he would never treat customers rudely, unless provoked. We have always been treated with courtesy and respect, and it would be counter-productive on his part to alienate customers, especially as pubs are struggling to survive.

The customer is always right? Well maybe some of the time but not always.

My husband and I used to go to this pub for dinner quite often, until one day when we decided to take my brother and sister-In-Law......

The landlord was extremely rude to us just because my sister-in-law complained about her steak (which was burnt). The landlord insisted we pay for it at the end of our meal, even though she didn't eat it. He then, to our horror, shouted to us to get out and never come back!!! CHARMING! IT WAS AN UTTER DISGRACE. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO: THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT??

No need to tell you we never want to set foot in that pub again and we have told all our friends to boycott it.

I have been here several times and all the meals have been good, very generous portions. I cannot imagine anyone who likes hearty home style cooking not enjoying this venue.
Last visit my group enjoyed the fish special, liver and bacon and meat pie, all got the thumbs up!!!!
well done to all the staff, especially the cooks!!
