I came to the opening of the Alchemist last year and was rather impress. On this first impression and friends recommendation I decided to host my birthday party there last Saturday 3 rd of February. I booked a reserved seated area for the 3 rd at 7.30 a week in advance providing a full list of my guest. A few days later I was asked to confirm my booking, which I did. I was called on the Saturday 3 rd two hours prior to the party by a guy called Ben who advised that the Alchemist was unable to provide me with a seated area as requested. I was quite put off by his attitude but heading to the venue few hours later. On arrival I was greeted by a friendly Andreas who I believe is the bar manager, He went out of his way to organise a sitting area by the kitchen as well as two complementary bottles of champagne, apologising for the double booking made for that night. The bar staff as well as the bouncer on that night were very friendly. But the place was just too packed ! Overall despite this hiccup we had a good night , but not sure I would held a party there again. anonymous - 6 Feb 2007 16:23 |
I was there last night (a Saturday), and I have to say - oh dear. I think their main problem was that they just let too many people in. It's not a big bar, and the huge square padded seats get in the way. When I first arrived at 8 it was busy, but we could deal with it. Come 9.30, it was absolutely rammed. To the extent where you couldn't move anywhere - not to the bar, not to the loo - without asking politely or shoving your way through the crowds. This was not 'normal bar busy' is was stupid. They were obviously prepared to sacrifice customer's comfort and safety and the expense of a few quid on the door. I was there for a birthday, and there was supposedly a private area. This was non-existent after about 8.30. The drinks - well, they had a somewhat unlikely note up saying "sorry, due to residents complaints (!) we can only serve bottles, not draught beer". And only on a Saturday. What? Sounds like an excuse to make more money to me. Bottles were 3.20 and the cocktails were a budget busting 7! - this is West End prices, not half way between Wandsworth and Clapham. And they helpfully only serve double shots, so if you were thinking of an affordable vodka tonic, then you can forget it. On the plus side, it scores well in that they don't have a person ready to take your money sat in the toilets. That is of course, when you get there after the queue!! And the girls enjoyed the disco - it was sort of wedding disco style with an edge. Not for me, but it went down well. And the wallpaper is nice. I think Alchemist could be alright for a mid-week drink (but expensive). On a weekend, forget it. Overall, sorry Alchemist - must try harder. superfibre - 4 Feb 2007 11:48 |
A new addition to Clapham's ever-growing number of bars. Having paid my first visit to Alchemist this bank-holiday I'm pleased to report that this place ticks all the right boxes. The front outdoor seating area was very pleasant - and when it got too chilly and we relocated indoors the atmosphere was brilliant. Everyone was in true bank-holiday weekend cheer and this made for a great night. Less a mid-week local - more a good weekend destination bar. Dandy - 31 Aug 2006 12:12 |
I was intrigued to visit this new bar having not made the proper launch a couple of weeks ago. I went early evening on sat to check out the menu and sample a couple of the cocktails. I really liked the place. It does seem that loads of bars are not quite sure how to get things right in terms of music/ interior etc but I think Alchemist works well. Its pretty cool without being too trendy. Drinks are a bit pricey but I really liked the beer garden! anonymous - 12 Jun 2006 14:33 |
I booked a party of 20 for their opening weekend, for which they were offering a reserved seating area, 2 for 1 cocktails, and champagne and nibbles brought round all night. In actual fact, their cocktails offer finished at 8pm, champagne and nibbles turned into Jagermeister (classy) and I saw one piece of pizza handed round all night, and as for the reserved seating area, they crammed in so many people that you couldn't sit down at all, and if you wanted to dance you could forget it! Don't bother. All they're interested in is your money, not how much you enjoy the place. I'll never go back and nor will my friends. I give them one point solely for their barstaff who were the saving grace on the night. anonymous - 25 May 2006 14:21 |
