The obese lump running this 'pub' has been giving it large on tv and in the media about "proper pub food". His advice would carry more weight if he ran a "proper pub". This place is a restaurant that will also serve you a pint with your meal. I have no problem with gastro-pubs - in fact round my way I prefer them - you can call them bistros or whatever but it's misleading to call them "pubs".

The food in this 2 x Michelin stared restaurant is simply fantastic.

Yes the food is expensive but if you want cheap there are many other options. I stayed here in Sept and simply found the place fantastic.

The reception from the staff was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. The food was as you expect top draw.

The only comment I would make is the ale choice could be wider.

very nice food if a little pricey. the three course lunch for 16.50 is brilliant, but a little more choice would be nice. good atmosphere.

This used to be a decent humble pub ran by 'Ernie' for years until late 80's if I recall. Anyone remember his wife's name? Anyway, pubs move on which is fair enough but to this? Poshed up uber gastro that really cant be called a pub, everyone friendly but give me my 'old' pub back

Nice but expensive food, well presented. Shared two set menus and one main with a carafe of red for 58. Despite having 3 hand pumps, there was no ale available; firstly they said it would take 30 minutes to settle and put on, which were prepared to wait for... but then we were told NO. When asked about bottled beers they had Guinness or San Miguel.... Two hours later and still no beer on leaving we were surprised to see it labelled 'A Greene King' pub (should guessed from the IPA pump clips).
:( Food 8 pub 1
If ale and food is your thing then maybe Heston or AWT are worth a try.
