user reviews of the Chequers Inn, Churchill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My first visit here which is the 2014 North Oxon Camra Pub of the Year with 6 handpumps but only 5 ales on, Hook Norton Hooky, Wye Valley HPA, Purity UBU, Stroud Budding and Bath Ales Barnesey, the first and last both found to be in good condition. Very welcoming and surprisingly well-priced for the area. The previous comments about the three outside tables is certainly accurate but with all tables taken the parked cars do not cause much of a deterrent. The food was not tried but looked good and a return visit will take place before too long.

The conversion into a restaurant with a bar added is unsuccessful (aside from anything else, it produced awful acoustics). There's a poor selection of beers; the food is OK, though it certainly falls well below "gastropub" standards. The service ranges from the offhand to the effusive (with not much between). Trying to escape the noise of the interior leaves you with a choice of three tables, one at the side, two at the front; in each case you're squeezed in behind parked cars. The village is pretty, but spoilt by the all the cars (as it seemed inexplicably to be a popular pub; certainly a very noisy one).

I went there recently for a leaving 'do' with work. The pub is very picturesque and I was looking forward to a nice meal. Sad to say, I was disappointed with both the meal and the drinks. Firstly, I found a large piece of plastic wrapper in my garlic mushroom starter. When I pointed it out to the waotress she simply said, "Ok I'll tell them," 'them' being the kitchen staff I assume, and that was that, no apology, no enquiry after my well being, no assurances that it would never happen again, nothing. Then, when the main course arrived, my plate was stone cold whilst my neighbours was too hot to touch, and the dish (chicken and bacon with asparagus) although tasty, was lukewarm. Then, to top it all off, I had to return my drink, a Jack Daniels and coke, to the bar as the coke was flat. I didn't like the fact that they don't serve bottles or cans of coke, but instead pour from a large bottle - which perhaps goes some way towards explaining why my drink was so flat. As I say, very pretty, but since it's quite a drive from Carterton, I'm afraid I won't be going out of my way to go back there based on this experience, and I won't be recommending it to anyone either.

Two visits in last two years. Staff very attentive and food tasty, but not a serious BEER pub!!
