After being in Alnwick earlier in the day, I returned to visit 2 pubs that had earlier been closed. Both were excellent. First stop was the Tanners Arms. This is a small, but popular one room local. It is brightly coloured inside and apparently hosts various live music events. There is a strange feature in the middle of the bar - a tree trunk. Toilets are through sliding doors as there'd be insufficient room for a swing door. Ales were Tempest Cascadian Blonde Ale, Wylam Galatia, Allendale Wagtail & Born In The Borders Dark Horse. Cider fetched from the cellar was Thistly Cross Original. I tried the Dark Horse and the Thistly Cross and both were good. Clientele were mostly getting on a little (including myself) and some appeared a little eccentric. A really good place for a drink.

Great little pub in the back-streets of the town. Just been in this afternoon (10/03/12). Three beers on, Scottish Borders Foxy Blonde, Mordue Milennium Bridge and Allendale Tar Bar'l stout. Nice surroundings, proper fire. Well worth a visit if you're in town.

A bit of a strange, old-fashioned pub but none the worse for it. Sign said 'under new management', and it shows: clean interior, some quirky touches in the furnishings and a comfortable, warm feeling to the place. Good jukebox kept at a nice low level, five handpulls (only three on though, but the beer was excellent. Friendly barstaff, even made a coffee for one of our party who was done with alcohol for the day.

Went in one damp night last week having started at the John Bull Inn (infinitely better). Two Northumberland ales on tap, both of which were decidedly badly kept, bar staff who didn't notice anyone was looking for a drink, and a clientle who tried their hardest to make non-locals feel as awkward as possible for existing. The fact no-one has reviewed this pub in 18 months is very telling.

I maybe missing something here, it's a branch acting as a column - not a tree.

1 ale on tap, strip lights and 2 people playing darts one of which worked there. Maybe on a different night there is atmosphere but not on this particular Friday!
