The Rose and Crown in Elham, Kent is a great pub with plenty of character in a very pleasant village. It has accommodation in large pleasant rooms.

The bar staff are friendly and efficient as is the Landlord, David Fourniller.

However, the high point of our stay was the Caribbean food which was quite simply, one of the best meals I have had in a long time. There were five in our party, four of us had Caribbean dishes, but we all agreed, the food was excellent.

Went in here on a Wednesday lunchtime. Lovely pint of master brew and an excellent lunch (Lamb followed by Apple Pie). Apparently the chef does a mean West Indian curry too. The current licencees have only been here a few months and I would say it is well worth a try. Food service was maybe a little slow - and they weren't busy - but otherwise excellent.

Nice beers in beautiful village.

But don't eat here. Had some decent but not great food here previously. Recent visits have been pretty poor. Salty, overcooked, poorly presented and overpriced. The staff are friendly, but not up to serving food and need reminding for coffees, the bill and so on.

Given the current financial unrest, a pub like this really needs to think about it's pricing and quality, or they'll loose more customers. We gave them a chance, we won't be returning.

After a long walk, we were too late to visit the Kings Arms recommended by the 5th earl as Sunday Lunch had finished. So found ourselves Here..
Had nice couple of Shep Early Bird which was a surprise. Food was also a surprise as very good and served with correct accompaniments. Shame it was spoilt by two annoying kids of someone at the bar, who were placed in front of the fireplace with pencils and paper and then proceeded to ignore that and jump all over the large sofas in front of the fire. I was about to suggest that my two well behaved children join him at the bar, where he was enjoying the ale in peace.
Still, will return as not a bad pub and one of the better Shepherd Neames..
