Surprised theres no reviews of this place for last 5 years, very much still up and running when we went in! Good pint of old Rosie, minimal ale selection as far as I could see. Jam packed with students watching football but a friendly enough atmos. Not one to write home about but a reasonable enough place to slake ones thirst.

called here last saturday. first time.
on arrival my impression was of a busy pub, with a quite "rough & ready" looking crowd. the outdoor covered smoking area at the front, facing on to the street, was packed most of the evening.
***
inside was also quite busy.
the interior had a well-used look about it, but not exceptionally tatty. theres a central bar with table/chair seating to the front. A more comfy style to the rear. I spotted a door to the beer garden at the back, but didn't check it out. the bar was well marked up with price tags, and there were lots of posters on display with offers.
although alarm bells rang a bit when I saw the plastic beer glasses and doormen! but I have to say I didn't feel particularly uncomfortable in the place.
most beers below 2, john smiths at 1.70.
there were a couple of cask beers on, one was of which was wells bombardier.
***
glancing around, the style looked familiar to me.
when I investigated further, it turned out to be a mitchell & butler pub, resembling their "goose" chain in style. i.e. cheap & cheerful offers on drinks & meals. Probably a good choice for a student area.

verdict:
its certainly a very popular pub at weekends.
slightly battered, but prices were good and keg beers were ok.
I don't go for cask much in M&B as I have been dissapointed a few times. theres nothing wrong with the brands, but I think they don't shift enough of it to be consistently good. If I were them, I'd take if off in these kind of pubs.
would I go again?
Yes, I reckon so if I was in the area.
I'm all for a bargain!

Usually busy with students, and an unexciting choice of beers, but has a huge beer garden.

Looks wicked with the new furniture!

Shit pints, so stick to bottles and you're laughing!

Unremarkable, but nice enough, with some comfy leather seats and fireplaces. Ale drinkers might be a little disappointed, but (unfussy) wine drinkers will be chuffed: You can get a bottle for under 6 quid.

small and smoky, located right next to a uni, ok for a quick drink
