Have been for lunch today, and although the food was ok, the inside of the place is really dark and unwelcoming, had to go and pinch cutlery off other table's, (the waitress forgot, after being asked) The food as I said was ok..... beef, turkey or gammon, really well cooked, but the veg was'nt anything to shout home about!! The most friendly staff in the pub was the chef at the carvery, the bar staff could all do with a lesson in how to smile..... and a refresher course in good manners. All in all a good value meal but have sat in much nicer surroundings. ( Their was ONE nice polite waitress, not bad I suppose out of about five)

Now has real ale, foods cheap and ok. �3.50 for a carvery, nobody is going to starve at these prices, Pub needs revamping

The pub chain that owns this place have grasped defeat from the jaws of victory.This is the only canalside inn between Penkridge,Stone and Fradley Junction and is situated on probably the busiest canal in the country.Lots of wealth foreigners hire boats and private owners have craft valued up to 150grand.And what does this pub offer ? No real ale,a beverage unique to these isles,only pished up fake lager.A pub interior dark and unwelcoming and set up for meals,and a drinking area inaccesable from the front door.Absolutely awful,this place needs gutting and returned to a more original form like a real pub with proper pub food and the taking will triple in short order.Dont take any notice about the sign on the road saying real ale is coming.Take a 10 minute walk to the Spittal Brook to see what a real pub can be like.

I think the Pub Inspectors should consider handing their licence back in, for this would be nowhere near a 10/10 pub even if it had real ale. It is slightly odd - the very large ground floor is given over entirely to a carvery / restaurant which as others rightly remark is extremely cheap and no doubt good value. Smaller ground level floor is the drinking area and is pretty forgettable. As the Pub Inspectors note, there is no real ale and that is poor.

This pub should have scored 10/10.

Excellent bar service provided by Hannah.

Excellent Carvery (only �3.50 at lunchtime, would you believe).

Unfortunately, it looses nearly all its points for having one thing missing, and one thing that should not have been there at all.

There is no real ale. It�s no good telling us these trendy �smooths� are ale, they are not. They are chemical crap. Surely, in a pub this size, there must be room for England�s traditional drink.

Secondly, the first thing you encounter as you walk through the door is a bloody Christmas Tree ! For God�s Sake, it was only the 4th of October � Get a Grip !

I knew this pub 30 years ago as the trumpet. Been back for a number of meals in the last few years and have never been dissapointed in the carvery meals. plenty of good grub well cooked and ive had as many yorkshires as ive wanted!!!! friendly staff.

Pub is a bit odd, think its had a refurb - but not that you'd notice, ground floor restaurant - carvery only, usually beef, gammon and turkey. Sadly, even though some time has been pout into properly cooking meat and basic selection of veg the cleanliness of the place lets its down, dirty tables, bits of food everywhere, gravy and sauces slopped all over the floor, the portions are stingy and you dare not ask for 2 Yorkshire puddings, have been in 3 times lately and walked out again without even looking for table. Have now given up - I'd rather slip over on Gravy in my own kitchen - a bit of a dive.
