user reviews of the Ravensbury Arms, Mitcham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The overflowing sewer in the car park should have warned us, we were there for a drink and a bite to eat after the funeral of a friend, just as we had been a year earlier for her husband. What a difference a year makes! The designated room was in a filthy condition with old food, chips, peas etc. liberally scattered on the wooden floor. The coffee machine was broken so they'd laid out the cups with a bowl of teabags and instant coffee, the sandwiches were of the British Rail variety, hard, stale and tending to curl.
The furniture was tired, torn and looked as though it had been purchased at a boot fair. The exterior wasn't any better strewn as it was with rubbish and litter.
The beer? 2 on tap were Doombar & Fullers London Pride, both in good nick, it's a pity the pub's not!

Goodness - what a pain to register on this website just to post a review! However, we thought this pub was worth the time it took to do so. We went on a Groupon offer before Christmas and thought the food was excellent, the staff were very efficient, friendly and helpful. Plan to revisit - especially on the steak night as the steak we had was very good. So good to see a pub which had been empty for some time given a new lease of life. Their Groupon offer was very good compared to others we have tried, very good value and no quibbles over what was included.

Read these reviews and decided to make up our own minds after looking at the menu online which seemed pretty good. The car park warns you that "social misfits operate in the area so don't leave valuables in the car!!!!!'
So we were wondering what we would meet at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon but we were so pleasantly surprised, restaurant was fully booked and the bar full. We managed to get a bar area table and ate there. Hubby pleased with the selection of ales and had a pint of Doombar. Food really quite good and atmosphere great too, food and drink prices very good too. As they were so busy was assuming we would have a long wait for food but wasn't the case and the staff efficient and pleasant. What a great local find, we normalyy drive 20-30 mins to find food and surroundings of this calibre, lets hope they go from strength to strength.

Beware of your valuables in this pub - there are thieves operating. My jacket was on the back of my chair whilst eating lunch. It's not until I later on that I realised my cashcard and drivers licence had been taken out of my wallet, and 1,500 cash had been drawn out of my bank account at three separate branches in Croydon that same afternoon. Be very careful.

My friend and I visited the Ravensbury Arms yesterday for a meal using a Groupon voucher my friend had purchased. The service we received was excellent, we were greeted with a friendly smile when we walked in and our waiter was also extremely friendly and attentive. The food we had was excellent and very tasty and we would certainly visit the Ravensbury again. I have read some of the other reviews and would like to bring peoples attention to the fact the this pub and restaurant has not long re-opened and a lot of the negative comments were posted before the re-opening, so please give this place a chance and try it for yourselves, I do not think you will be disappointed.

So after a period of 'which way will it go' - restaurant idea that went bust then back to a pub again - this has had a re-furb, and tried it out around a month ago.
It looks nice inside, the bar area seems more impressive with a greater range of drinks. Staff too are very friendly. But from my POV and others below just seems like that little bit is missing. With my visit, food was fine and they even said they'd bring our drinks to our table - but then we got handed the dessert menu, and we'd built up to have one, but then after having one staff member come around and pander to all of the 3 other tables around us for around 20 minutes - and she came around 5-6 times, we felt ignored and asked for the bill. I think this included the table next to us pretty much receiving their roast dinner and finishing it off during the wait.
However, don't want to be too negative - will definately give it another go - it deserves to do well...

Very disappointing visit to this pub. Although a successful refurbishment, the experience left a lot to be desired. Service was friendly enough, in a "we have just been on a Customer Service training course" way, but the food was truly awful - at least not too expensive. A customer came in with a dog and sat next to us in a dining area (obviously allowed), the staff made a big fuss of the dog, petting it and then serving our food with the same hands! Yuk. Would recommend it for a quick drink only, not for an evening out.

Have now eaten in here and food very good. Be careful if having a pint of Blue Moon. They stick oranges in it.

This pub is now open again and has much improved. Six real ales on and the food is very good I hear. made it over 21's (unless eating with an adult) and trying to keep the riff raff out (not easy in Mitcham)

Now closed you will be pleased to hear.

Total loser pub. the staff are bossy, inefficient and just plain mooses. The place should be bulldozed to the ground. Tossers the lot of them. A big fat zero is too high.

Having just returned from the Ravensbury the only positive thing that I can say is that the beer was just above average. The food however is a completely different matter, I know that I went to a local pub and not a gourmet restaurant but I would still expect a certain level of standards. The starter took nearly 40 minutes to arrive and was a complete abomination to baked camembert. I really dont believe that the Ravensbury has a head chef, just a chief microwave operator. The vegetarian tart was a disgrace and looked like it have been gently cooked under a 30watt bulb, several times. The pub is sited in an awkward location but they have done the best that they can with the room that is available, it is clean and bright with a very large summer garden. Admittedly I went there on a Friday night but it looked like the sort of place that you would go to with a group of friends on your scooters and discuss the latest Jeremy Kyle show, of the four members of staff that were on, two of them couldnt be any more helpful, always being pleasant, efficient and welcoming. The other two stropped around the place like a sulking teenager, and the young lady that served us our food slammed the plates down from such a height, that would make any owner of a greasy spoon cafe proud. I will never cross the threshold of this establishment again.

Has gone downhill over the last 5 years or so
Used to have a decent pop in meal and drink feel to it, but the food has slowly gotten worse and worse. I can believe the long wait comments below as well, as I have had to wait for over an hour myself.
Have been to a reasonably fun quiz night here in the past, and does have a decent Summer beer Garden, but other than that the appeal has totally worn off

Not a family friendly pub, told by staff that could only breastfeed outside and oredered out to the garden or we would have to leave. The overall apperance is dated and old with old smelly carpets and needs some paint. Will never visit again and avoid.

I went there yesterday with 4 friends.. What a big mistake, when we got there there was all kids serving up the food. We were greated with "Theres at least 1/2 wait for food " I wouldnt have minded but the place was empty! When ordering food i asked what was good, the girl replied, well i wouldnt eat here. So i said is anything made on the premises? She said no its all processed food !!! I took my chances and ordered 5 meals. Which believe me was totally processed.. RUBBER! iT ARRIVED 1 hour 20 minutes later. I have never ever eaten anywhere so bad, and eat out alot! the place im told had been done up after a refit, well they must have missed the toilets, absolutely horrid and stinking, as if they had not been cleaned in weeks...
I would never ever again eat here.. When i asked to see the manager, i was told they were to busy.. I would not reccommend this to anyone...

I thought I would just update this a bit as it seems to have outdated comments now. I went to the Ravensbury Arms last night (New Yrs Day) for dinner and what a dinner it was. We had Splitback prawns and calamari for starters which were really fresh and very tasty. For our mains I had the sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection and the buttery mash potato was really something, the other main was a full rack ribs which Im told were very tender and very tasty too. Topped off with a nice South Eastern Australian wine and this dinner in front of the open fire seemed to be absolute value for money. My personal opinion is we got more than what we paid for. Go and try this place out and I don't think you will be disappointed!

has a good quiz even if most of the teams cheat on phones including mine

Really nutty girl working behind the bar, but very nice. Food was ok - portions a bit small. My daughter said her tortelloni was a bit flabby with too much sauce. I told her to shut up and eat it.

I really like the Ravensbury - I started going there over the past six months or so, and have been really impressed with the nice and friendly bar staff.
Before I knew it better, I thought it looked like it was going to be a bit rough, but its not at all.
I havent eaten there yet, so cant comment on the food.
I was in there on NYE, and we were given a few free rounds throughout the night, champagne and cigars at midnight, and had a really good time.

Been here a few times now. It's a nice pub, shame its in the middle of a main road. Not easy to get their if you don't drive.
HUGE beer garden gerat for the summers, really comfy non-smoking area, nice sofas etc. Some things need a few touch ups, but they just got a new manager, so maybe things will change for the better. Quiz nights on tues and sun are popular too!
Typical Ember decore and menu.
OVERALL: A NICE PUB FOR A QUIET RELAXED DRINK

My wife and I visited this pub for the Christmas Special Menu on Wednesday 15th December. We are both and our seventies and have eaten all over the world and this was the worst restaurant meal we have ever had. The cold first course toook 45 minutes to come and was not what was on the menu. The main course was awful: flooded with gravy: small poorly cooked vegetables and turkey that was sliced many days before the meal and pre-packed. Never again.

Nice pub with nice staff - especially the girl who usually reads the questions on the Sunday quiz night (hot!) 2 fruit machines, no smoking area plus various board games scattered about. Good selection of drinks too. Recommended.
