Very characterful, friendly pub in keeping with the rest of this alluring town. The perfect spot for a relaxing pint after a long walk. The kind of place where you will soon find yourself in conversation with strangers. Nice.

2nd of the GBG pubs in town.

This would be my local if l lived there.

Full of charm and rooms, hanging off other rooms.

Bustling on a Sunday Lunch - food looked great, Sunday Newspapers and roaring fires.

What more could you want?

Good Mauldons Mild although expensive. Decent place, lots of romms coming off the main bar. Worth a visit.

This pub is massively improved over my last comment. The ale quality is good and service is friendly. The pub has been redecorated but has been unaltered so retains its character.

The King's Arms looks small from the outside. But inside, there are at least 4 rooms. There is the main bar, a room to the side with a TV showing live football, another with a pool table and a fourth room that was hosting a live rock band during my Sunday afternoon visit. Beers on were Woodfordes Wherry, one called Boundary (possibly from Wadworth), Greene King IPA & Sharps Doom Bar. Aspalls was the cider. The main bar and the music room were both packed. I retreated to the small TV room, which I had to myself. Seemingly there is no interest in the Carling Cup in Saffron Walden!

Decent town centre pub which is more reliable and freindlier than some of the others. Good rotating ales including Wherry and fair priced bar food (at least lunch time during my visit). Courtyard beer garden at back which is hidden from the front and very welcome.

Pub has been redecorated throughout, the garden is now a place to enjoy. Good selection of real ales - they even have a Cask Marque certificate! Good food, good music. A welcome change from some of the 'chain' pubs.

If the pub was due to be redecorated in the "few" months after September 2010, it still hadn't happened 9 months later. Acceptable beer, but not all that special. Food was pretty average, but fairly cheap. The elderly locals in the corner (lunchtime) seem to make The Daily Mail look positively left-wing and offer their opinions to the pub as a whole. Better places nearby, but because of a closed kitchen at the pub I'd intended to visit I thought I would give this a try. Probably won't be back to see if it ever DOES re-decorate.

The same low standards still exist; probably the worst pub in Saffron.

Just to let people know, new licencee, dropped prices. guest real ales, no more slops back in barrels. excellent guiness & Spitfire. Pub due to be redecorated in next few months. Live bands on a regular basis. getting very busy. Going up in the world.

Was visiting SW today and had lunch here. Thought it was great. Unpretentious - didn't try to be too fancy and did what it did do well. Good selection of beer, well kept. Food was straightforward but well done. Any complaints? One of the bar staff was a bit miserable. And there was a jazz band rehearsing in the room next door, a bit surreal but better than piped music. Would definitely go again if I was back in town.

Of the six comments in the last two years, one was positive. This pub is very midiocre at best; beer quality and hygiene standards are low - just like those of the management. Many better venues nearby.

bertie2...this place is awful. If it wasn't for its location, nobody would dream of entering this sad hovel where the 'management' is constantly drunk. Prices! See the 25th May post; he got off lightly!! 1/10...is 0/10 possible here?
blackgander - 20 Aug 2009 15:21
With regards to the poster below saying there is a 'little clique that live there'. I think you'll find they are called regulars. Go in the OEG or the Duke and you'll find the same thing. If you actually get talking to the clique' I think you'll find the majority will make you feel welcome and include you in conversation.
bertie2 - 20 Aug 2009 12:16
This is a tired little place that survives only because of its town centre location; it has a little clique that live there. But, with good management, it could be one of the town's best. Its not cheap, but the previous poster's experience smacks of rip-off. Pity that things have now come to this, but years of low calibre management [like the present] have had their toll. 2/10 is generous.

Two negative comments in 1.5 years! Here's another.
Double vodka and coke; 7.80. Are they having a laugh?
Just moved into town - never be here again; guv and partner (?) drunk, very...

In my experience the draught Bass has always been on the turn when I've been there. Great if you like a pint of vinegar - I don't though.
Zaphod_Beeblebrox - 13 Jul 2008 20:13
The landlord is a miserable old git.

Love this pub, the only REAL pub left in saffron walden. Charles is wonderful as is ashley behind the bar i will be back again and again and again
richyjones - 12 Jul 2007 14:23
The bar staff at this pub are the most professional, polite and well-presented that I have ever seen. I hope their demeanour is reflected in their pay.
beerdrinker7 - 14 May 2007 14:11
Practically live there. Marvellous. Met spouse there so feel compelled to frequent as form of thanks. Food's a bit pants though.

This Pub is absolutely fantastic. It is a highly sociable pub so if you do not fancy talking to someone you have never spoken to before, then maybe it's not for you. The wonderful landlord Charles is just so charming and wanders round ensuring each and everyone of his customers is ok. Can't fault it at all, wonderful character, atmosphere, originality and definitely the best pub in Saffron Walden.
