user reviews of the Master Gunner, Moorgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went here for the first time on Monday evening and had a very poor pint of Bombadier.

As I said, it's the first time I've been, so I don't know if this is the norm or an unfortunate blip, but I'm not sure if the place deserves another chance given that there are other excellent pubs round here.

Just been to the Master Gunner for lunch.

Ordered a ham and cheese sandwich which came with no cheese and on very hard, if not stale bread.

The chips ordered didnt turn up.

The sausage sandwich was again made with the same bread and the poor old sausage was hard and made of that congealed tasteless mess you'd imagine to be found under a dog bowl. Very poor. How can one mess up a sausage sandwich?

perfectly satisfactory watering hole in an area dominated by sad , featureless "bars" populated by undiscriminating young city types....
The_Speckled_Hen - 2 Jul 2010 15:06
overpriced, suit-dominated beer supermarket.

If a lack of character and atmosphere mean that you want a fight then I would stick to the North of Old Street too!
Not sure what people mean to be honest. Yes it is a little pricey but the staff are always friendly, chatty and swift and always seems to be busier than the surrounding pubs. Have tried most of the other pubs and it certainly seems to me that the old quote "you get what you pay for" is true.
Top marks!

I seem to always end up here as it's on the way to Moorgate from where I work, but it ain't great, that's for sure. My New Year's resolution is to stick to the north of Old Street. The Youngs ales are pleasing but otherwise, there is a real lack of character to the place.

This place is a bit food orientated for my liking with condiments on every table, but the governor was extremely friendly and my pint of Guinness was very nice. Ordinary, Special and Bombardier were also available alongside a selection of standard draught and premium lagers.

The pub dcor is nothing out of the ordinary, but there is a decent pool room downstairs that houses two tables.

This place isnt worth a special trip, but I wouldnt have a problem with having a beer here if passing.

Overpriced beer and food. Much better boozers in the locality.

Overpriced beer(318p for a pint of youngs bitter!) and food.Better value elsewhere in area.

Speaking as a City idiot (actually it is just outside the Square Mile but it is close enough) I can think of other watering holes in the area that are a lot worse than this.

It was originally a Finchs, Youngs attempt to compete in the All Bar One market. Surprisingly they ditched the drinking in IKEA look and refurbed to a more traditional pub look. It is still female friendly with lots of sofas and seating, and it places a heavy emphasis on food. The food has always been OK when I have eaten there, if a little overpriced. Beer is probably also a bit overpriced but at least they do a decent range and they do not give you your change on a little dish in expectation that you will tip them for the pleasure of being charged over the odds (go to The Worshio bar in Worship Street if you want that level of bare faced cheek).

For a more local experience Id recommend the Artillery Arms round the corner, a poky but atmospheric Fullers pub that is frequented by locals as well as City idiots.

Single room pub but quite large (certainly deep) - the bar and rer are a little reminiscent of an All Bar One but this is definitely more of a ub. It's not too bad but looking around this area there are many better options.

I was watching a match the last time I went in but the lack of big screens doesn't make it an ideal destination for sports viewing.

No real incentive to come here unless it happens to be the closest pub to where you work

Windass the Fox is the stinking pit where you can smell the toilet throughout the entire establishment. Rather says something about your character I feel. The Gunner is by far and away the best pub in the area and for a few more sheckles you get a decent pint with great service.

Youngs pub with what I would call city character. Has had the usual Youngs refurb at some point, so has the polished 1900s wood look inside.
The usual Youngs suspects available to drink, The Ordinary wasnt bad. The menu looked quite good, although I didnt eat in here on this occasion, I have in the past and it has been very good.

Forced to go into this pit of Hades again the other day. Still overpriced beer served by rude and ugly bar staff. Why not go round the corner to the Fox?!? Better beer, reasonably priced and hot bar staff, especially the Cerys Matthews look alike!
windass50 - 7 Sep 2008 21:52
What absolute rubbish Windass is talking. This is a lovely pub with great staff that are only too willing to help. You spent nearly 20 Mr Windass wow!! This is the city of London my friend time to wake up and smell the coffee!!
Beer is more reasonably priced at 3 to 3.50 and the food is always excellent. One of my favourite city retreats and always busy.
Back to your half pint and peanuts Mr Windass you old fuddy!!
Pumpy - 4 Jul 2008 18:22
Worst pub in London. Over priced beer, around 4 a pint and full of City idiots. Bar staff are morons. I asked for some free olives after spending around 20 (100 between our group) and they refused.

Know this pub very well, and in answer to the previous posters - the girl in question is the lovely Lucy. In fact the bar staff is the major plus point of this pub who do a great job when it gets invariably busy - especially at lunchtimes and towards the weekend. My only criticism is the food which is mediocre at best and ridiculously overpriced.
bushwhacker1 - 5 Dec 2007 13:49
Great boozer-busy lunchtimes and 5pm until 8ish most nights. Good draught lagers and the girls seem to like the wines! agree with previous comment - the blonde bird is very easy on the eye and friendly. Must be my charm..

visited this bar yesterday and had a great lunch, the landlord who looks a bit like a freddie mercury/homer simpson cross, was quite hospitable, but my attention was focused on the buxom blonde lovely with the plunging neckline, possibly homers daughter, i think her name was "lucky". All, in all a great experience.

The best thing about this pub is the staff, they are so friendly and really make it what it is. I enjoyed it as Finches and enjoy it now.
Savannah - 19 Oct 2006 20:36
Knowing this pub under its previous guise, I was prepared to be pleasantly surprised and wasn't. The prices were awfully high for musky beer and the food was so overpriced I was looking around for cameras. 'The money' is in food, I admit, but Young's need to first make sure that as a pub this place is a success. Atmosphere: nil, value for money: nil. However the staff were all help and smiles, hopefully not because of the 10% surplus, but to earn it.

Nice, Youngs have struck gold here, they've removed the "Wine Bar" decor they put in a few years ago and put the wood pannelling back. Its about average on price for round here, but a much better pint, with friendly service han many places on the main road. It is still afflicted with being way too busy towards the end of the week though.
youknowyouloveit - 1 Mar 2006 15:32
A jolly place - fills up nicely and always good fun. Food is distinctly average but the Young's beers are well kept (Winter Warmer at the moment is particularly good, I haven't tasted it better anywhere else). A good bet if you need somewhere to go in the area and want a good pint and somewhere comfortable to sit.
anonymous - 15 Dec 2005 15:05
not the cheapest beer or food in area but chris knows how to serve a good pint of youngs excellent ales.pleasant bar staff, wide choice of food with evening platters.
