user reviews of the Prince Albert, Ely

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Beer choice seems to have dramatically improved since my last visit as well as a restaurant built on the rear. Food was very good. We dislike Greene King products but their rare Dark Mild is a classic and this pub sells it. This pub and Draymans Son (ex Liberty Belle) are the only two worth seeking out in Ely in my opinion.

Found myself with a spare hour in Ely during a brief visit. Called into the Prince Albert - friendly staff, very friendly locals and a wide range of well-kept real ales.
What a pity that I live about 400 miles away!

Went there every evening on a very pleasant three-night stay in the city. Brilliant beers, great landlord, lovely bar staff, pleasant garden, well-cooked food. Perfect! Best pub in Ely by miles

Best beer pub in Ely with only the newly-opened Liberty Belle coming close. It has the feel of an old fashioned lounge with its carpets and striped wallpaper and no fruit machine or music. Six well-kept beers on tap included XX Mild, Thwaite's Nutty Black and - a new one on me - the superb Bath Brewery's Gem. Excellent, knowledgeable staff complete a very attractive package. Only slight downside is that it's sometimes a struggle to make your way through the semi-circle of regulars who crowd round the small bar.

This is how a local pub should be. Still struggling under the yoke of Greedy King, the Prince Albert offers a wide choice of Ale, Real Cider and Keg Classics, all kept in utterly fine fettle! In the summer, the garden is a treat - although the local church bells can be a bit much, but that's not the pubs doing.
A wide range of local custom and more and more passing trade make this pub inviting and welcoming.
I have nothing but utter praise for the Prince Albert. I have always been made to feel welcome, and I never feel I have been over charged when I leave. The XX Mild is a standard, which again, I applaud.
The kitchen and back bar areas *might* be rebuilt and I think this will only add to what is already a fantastic pub. Can I praise it any more?

A classic old pub down a residential street. You normally get a friendly welcome, and the landlord knows his ales and is happy to recommend. The bar area doesn't have music or distractions, but the regulars tend to be quite chatty and friendly. The day's papers and a selection of books are normally left on the side if you fancy a read with your pint. There's a long narrow garden out the back with some rather dilapidated benches and tables, but it's fine on a nice day. The main reason to go here is for the selection of real ales - there's always 5-6 on, they're served in perfect condition, and the prices are reaasonable. A bit of a connaiseur's pub for the ale drinker.

Six ales on and I had a pint of York Guzzler. Rather quiet, though it was 7pm on a Thursday evening. Friendly barmaid and 'famous' dog (as seen in local press).

Walked past on way to West End intending not to try it as GBG says guests from Green King portfolio but met a fellow traveller in West End who said they had beers from Titanic, Thwaites and Nethergate (I think) and so went back and was not disappointed. Excellent old style pub which ok was quiet when I was there on a monday afternoon but must have a great atmosphere when busy.

Top pub, haven't been here since 1996 when I lived here for a while.

Called in enroute to a football match in Cambridge (Histon), very friendly welcome, communtiy pub with loads of veg on sale outside making most of some sort of fair that was going on in the town.

Took a real ale supremo with me and even he was full of praise for the Greene King Mild. No music, no TV, just good beer and chat with the locals, inc the Wales RFU supporting landlord - the wake starts tomorrow apparently!

Hopefully visit again in the Blue Square 'North' and thanks for the warm welcome, a really good pub. Try it!

I cannot understand the previous comment. I've been a regular visitor to this pub for the past year and have never found the toilets to be anything other than very clean and tidy. My wife says the same is true of the Ladies.

What is more, I am sure if anyone reported a problem to the bar staff, thy would deal with it promptly. The Albert is a friendly well-run, local.

we visited this pub as it is my friends local as i was driving i had a coke. Well i was charged 2.80 for a can of coke and my friend was so embarrassed he refunded my money and this ruined my evening.

The toilets were disgusting and havent been cleaned for months. There is a chalkboard and at least two people and 'pleaded' with the barman to get the mop out and clean it.

My glass was also dirty and hadnt been cleaned.
Dont bother going into this pub its a disgrace. I would dare any one to eat in there.

Visited on a Wed afternoon at the end of March. delighted pub is open all day and staff very friendly. Beer was good with 6 real ales on so plenty of choice. Well kept they obviously know what they are doing. Yes pub is quiet no background music etc. Our only gripe is that there was no heating on. End of March, a rainy afternoon and we were sat with our coats on as were two other couples that came in. Even the bar staff had coats on! We would have stayed longer but were too cold. Com'on guys sort the heating out!

Love this pub. Perfect place to sit and chat over a pint as there isn't any background music. Out of the way of the chav holes in town. Does a wicked pint of Stowford Press.
lovethypub - 12 Dec 2010 14:09
Probably just a matter of personal taste, but it felt like a time warp to me. It is dated and intimate to the point of creepy.
strethamite - 27 Nov 2010 19:09
Divine pints of XX Mild on a welcome escape from the never ending torrents of rain on day trip to Ely. We were one of only four drinkers over lunch time but had some decent pub grub to supplement the pints, though the chilli did remind me, in a reasonable way, of food at my halls of residence many moons ago. But fine beer and good to see a wide range of guest beers, though these remained unsampled.

Every town needs a pub like this! Friendly, a good selection of beers, a lovely beer garden, and a quiet atmosphere. OK, it wont appeal to many youngsters, although there were a few young couples in on our first visit on 10th September. OK, so the 'paperback' range in the rear corridor may not be the British Library, but so what? The beers included the (rare) Greene King XX Dark Mild (my first pint of this since 1988!), Bath 'Gem', Holts 'Humdinger', and the usual Abbot and IPA. Oh, and by the way, we are not pensioners!
markh737 - 18 Sep 2010 21:14
Don't take any noitice of the "pensioner" comments they are not true. This has recently changed hands and has new management. The beer remains excellent and now the PA is open all day and offers and extended menu too. Well worth a try - good beer and good food - a haunt for many local CAMRA memebrs.

Went there Sat 15 August Best pub in Ely for me.Great real ales and the Abbot is blinding! Great beer garden for in the summer evening. My girlfriend says its a nice undaunting place and that she could go in on her own for a drink as its friendly.A fantastic bloke behind the bar and a very nice ambience all around. No mouthy shite in here to spoil your night.Well recommended.
sweeties1975 - 17 Aug 2009 13:27
Everything that has been said about the pub is true but it depends what you want from a pub. Well kept ale and all that but atmosphere wise you would have to be well turned 65 to get on well here and have a mustard coloured cardigan with wooden buttons. Certainly unlikely to suit anyone under pensionable age. Been in a few times and I wouldnt drink there again if the beer was 1940s prices, like most of the customers
The_Man - 27 Jul 2009 22:06
The little boozer's a gem. It's a throw back to years ago, with excellent beer and decent grub (though food's only at lunchtimes and not on Sunday). There's no music, jukeboxes or silly slot machines. Just an above-average aged crowd enjoying decent beer. Go here for a quiet pint away from annoying younger drinkers.
boodle - 13 Oct 2008 20:54
Lovely old fashioned local. Well-kept Greene King ales and excellent traditional food [if a bit basic]. Nice garden at the back which feels like you're sitting in a friend's garden.
drmarkf - 15 Aug 2006 08:33
Everything below is true - the locals here are the stars - best Greene King you'll taste (best in summer in the garden)
mtaylor40 - 21 Sep 2005 21:09
A lovely pub with one of the best gardens in Ely. Well kept and well well run, but can feel a bit s bit daunting for the "outsider", but still worth a visit.
clivebutcher - 20 Mar 2005 19:48
An amazing pub, friendly, excellent beer, and the garden is the most beautiful I've been in.
mikewmiller - 10 Dec 2004 17:17
Excellent local pub, good range of well kept beers. Extremely nice garden too, overlooks a church and small private back gardens.
mym - 14 Jun 2004 17:20
A real old fashioned locals pub. Good range of ales on tap as well as regular names. At request you can even have it served in an old fashioned pint pot :)
Locals and staff are friendly. One of the few pubs left that still closes in the afternoon, which comes as a shock to most city dwellers. Great place to while away a Sunday afternoon with friends.
