Pleasant decor etc, but beer very expensive - London prices!!!

Went for food, but was put off by two chefs sat outside smoking. Pub was clean, beer well kept, and whilst the pub has plenty of character, it lacked any atmosphere despite being half full.

The current landlords of the Barley Mow have really turned the pub around. The mid-week special at 8.95 for two courses was superb - gormet standard presentation and taste, and very attentive and polite service. Will be going back again very soon!
Beer was also served fresh and at good temperature.

Have been in several times in the past few months for drinks and/or food and have always it to be a pleasant experience. The staff have always been friendly and efficient. The food has always been worth the price. We've been twice for Tapas night on Tuesday and found the food to be good and portions more than adequate. The outdoor seating area is very appealing as well.

I have had the pleasure of visiting this delightful country pub on several occasions since it reopened under new management (just over a year ago), and I can honestly say that I have yet to be disappointed in any way. The overall atmosphere is warm and cosy and the staff are always welcoming, friendly and helpful. Best of all, the food is genuinely superb (I speak as someone who has sampled a good portion of the menu)! Even if you're not hungry, the bar area offers an excellent range of ales and has great character - the perfect place to while away a lazy afternoon.

We love this pub!

My husband and I ate there for the first time last May (2010). I don't often eat steak when I go out but I can honestly say this was the best steak I have eaten. I had the sweet potato wedges to start which were delicious.

The pub has a lovely friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the staff work hard to make sure you have a good experience. I have taken my family here on several occassions and have never been let down.

We were there on a magic night too! The pub was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying it as much as we were. Fantastic food and great service through out the evening. We will definitely be returning and hoping for another magic night soon!!

We went there for a magic night and will never be setting foot in the pub again. The young girl who lead us to our table was great but then we had another person and she was as grumpy as ever and not at all friendly. It took 30 mins to get our drinks and another 30 mins to get food in the end we cancelled our pudding and got the bill.

Food rubbish had to send a meal back and we had soup to start and they had no soup spoons and there was just us 6 and another table at this time. And prices are very high.

It's open again under new management.
3 really good beers. Hooping Hare was SO good.
Head chef really friendly.
Landlord really pleasant - couldn't do enough for us.
Really hope it works.
Looked at the menu- lots of good stuff AND the Head Chef (Lee, I think) says- if you want something differentr, just ask!
TRY IT !!

At present the Barley Mow is closed, although, I'm told, not for long.

As my earlier review of this pub seems to have vanished, I'll have to start again. In a tucked away location the 'Mow' is a fair-sized Badger dining pub with a large car-park.
The beer, if you like Badger, is usually well kept, Best, Hopping Hare and Tanglefoot on my last visit. This may be a dining pub, but I found the menu uninteresting, and my meal bland and uninspiring. I know at least two Badger pubs in the general area that make a much better job of similar menus.
For a Badger pub, I like this place, I really do. It has had it's ups and downs recently but nowadays it a clean and friendly place with well drinkable, if expensive, beer. A real shame about the food.........
My rating remains 6. OK, but could do so much better.

Food here used to be very, very good. The new menu is now very poor, and not many choices. On my last visit 6 of the group of 8 did not finish the meals due to taste, flavour and cold meals. The cottage pie seemed to be a plate of mash potato!
The male waiter was very keen to sell the menu but did not fully know all the meals on the menu when asked.

having now been to 2 themed evenings at the barley mow i am totally hooked on the food, service & location. burns night was a truly cultural experience, with the star of the show being the haggis, cooked superbly by the very talented new chef andy kelly. the addition of bag pipes and an authentic story teller detailing robbie burns's life made the evening complete. impressed by this i was easily persuaded to make sure my husband took me out for the valentine's menu, accompanied by 4 friends with a mutual love of good food. we were not disappointed! 5 courses, including seabass and a to die for dessert, chocolate fudge brownie, with blueberry ice cream. jim and jacqui, the new management, have helped the barley mow return to being a superb place to eat and drink, with the location speaking for itself! i would recommend the barley mow to anyone wanting a truly enjoyable experience, with friendly staff and innovative food, all cooked on the premises, using local suppliers.

Just visited this pub because I heard the new chef was good, well he isnt! He is brilliant, fantastic innovative food with generous portions very good value for money. Under new management now this pub is more friendly and welcoming than ever, the new team are really community minded and LISTEN to the customer. On our visit, which will be the first of many we were on excellent terms with all the staff in hours, made to feel valued as a customer. Beer priced a around 3 a pint in general and the wine selection varied and good.
A place to visit just to see the deserts.

The most recent comments about the Barley Mow are a shame because I loved my last visit! The portions are generous and the new chef is a genius! The ex-landlady has been replaced by a couple with a great drive and personality and the entire place feels like it has had a breath of fresh air.

You should definitely give the Barley Mow a try as I could not fault one aspect of my visit!

i have been to this public house many times over the last 5 or so years, the food there is fantastic, and i cannot fault the portions you get, the food is of high quality and very much worth the wait if, on a busy time, there is one. unfortuently i will not be returning to this establishment due to the appauling attitude of the land lady, not only did i find her rude but from a customers point of view i found her lacking in any respect for her staff, i have found that everytime i, myself, was a customer in the pub the staff showed up most help and pleasentness to all of the customers, being very friendly and welcoming. i found myself, one night, being in earshot of the landlady herself using foul language towards her staff in a very unprofessional way. not to mention the fact that i rarely saw her behind the bar, but sat the otherside. i would definatly recomend the barley mow to others as the setting and ambience is lovely, but with caution.

Outstanding. Been in twice for evening meals over the last week, whilst on holiday in the area. Good wide ranging menu, with a number of interesting specials.
Friendly & welcoming landlady, and hard-working, efficient staff. Agree with Ajho that they've got the right balance between pub & restaurant. They've got a really tasty seasonal beer on from Badger, called "Stinger" on there at the moment, which I'd definitely recommend!
Garden looked nice, but it was raining on both our visits so we never sat in it!

much better at lunch times
evenings very busy especially fridays & saturdays
had to wait ages for our food

Derservedly popular. Hits the tricky balance between being a pub that does food and a restaurant that serves beer right on the head.

Good beer. Food is tasty, well cooked and occasionally adventurous. Modern extention at the back very much in keeping with the old beams and open fire in the original front part of the building.
