Heard it's going to open soon as a bistro, a lot better than being derelict!
Heard it's going to be a Pizza Express !
Apparently the owner lives upstairs
No sign of any work going on and it's in a sad state.
I think a small firm was planning to do it up, but the story goes that a theft of kitchen equipment meant that they couldn't afford to continue.
Does anyone know whats happning with the star? is it reopenning
I understand that the Star will be reopening in May, as a food/bar outlet.
The Star is closing on the 10th February.
Let's hope someone will take it on.
This pub is sitiuated within 'Ewell Village', which still is 'a suburban village.
I've been in there a few times when the live bands are on, but it attracts outsiders who only want to hear loud rock 70's music.
It'll be interested to hear what happens, when the complaints floud in when the flats above the Sainsbury's local are occupied in Spring 2012
i had the pleasure of coming here recently i must say.this place was clean and well preserved.real ale (badgers, tanglefoot) and nice staff in abundance and may i say i have not tasted better beer in years.yet the music was certainly not out of place (a mixture you dont find to often other than a few youngs houses) located in a world i didnt think existed anymore.i can only say sorry the star is on the radar and most certainly will be returning !!!
This pub seems to have gone downhill recently. No food served, virtually empty at lunchtimes, and seems to survive only because of the regular live rock bands. Badly needs redecorating.
An unusual pub with 2 rooms at the front of the pub with the bar well set back in the middle. The front lounges are comfortable but the bar area is a bit sparce for my taste. There is a raised area at the back with a pool table. They only had 2 real ales but they were Hall & Woodhouse Badger and Tanglefoot which were very good. It was bit quiet when I was there but it was mid afternoon.
Went to the star on friday night to see a band called shooter play. The pub has changed since the last time i was in. They have a dedicated stage and pa system for the bands. The bar staff were friendly the ale was good, punters well behaved. And the band rocked. Goodnight in all
what a lovely pub had a few beers with the missus a few evenings ago in front of a log fire. staff really friendly and prices were reasonable will be going back soon. p.s also got a pool table don't see many of them in pubs nowadays :-)
These days its a very nice little pub, clean, good staff, good beer and sometimes very good music on a saturday night. What more do you want? Probably the best pub in the village at the moment. Also note the beer seems to be just a little cheaper than the other local pubs!
OMG. The Star has changed since the last time we were there. Staff are friendly. It's clean and the food has improved! Went to see a band few weeks ago. Good atmosphere and plenty of people enjoying themselves. Hope they keep it up.
Things are changing at the Star since the change of management - even the dog has gone. Please give us another try and given us some up to date feedback so that we can continue to improve. Hall & Woodhouse.
Haven't been there late in the evening but it was fine when me and missus went there on a Saturday afternoon. In fact we've been back several times and not seen any trouble yet.
There's also a nice friendly pub dog always running about the place.
And it has TWO pool tables so if you're into pool like I am you should be able to get a game easily.
Have to say one of the pub dog's mates shat on the floor one time and it wasn't cleaned up for a while, on that basis I'd feel a bit uneasy about eating there- but it's not really an eating pub as far as I can tell.
Everything else about it seems fine, good bar staff and good range of lagers and ciders.
Terrible pub
bad pub... the place is full of pikeys and knobheads.....( sorry traveling folk and village idiots ). if you value you`r life... DO NOT ENTER......
ENTER AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
This place is a complete dump. Full of pikey's on most Friday and Saturday nightS. Door staff are rude.
If you need a drug fix...definitely the place to go and score. Either that, or catch herpes.
Badger pub, Tanglefoot and Hopping Hare were on. Modernised pub but quite rambling. Table football and pool tables.
Only been to this pub twice in recent months and both times been disappointed. The staff are very busy talking to each other and the very few regulars, so don't expect any service. It's easier to walk out and choose one of the others in the village - or avoid it altogether which is what I will be doing.
This pub was recommended as the highlight of the village but it was a huge disappointment. The place is dingy and dirty and in need of some lighting, but the beer was excellent.
What has happened to this pub? Myself and wife loved this pub once......... New management again, which likes to play gaming machines when shes workin (not often), snogs her boyfriends face off in full view, talks down to her staff, made it into a arcade which attracts young kids and thier fowl mouths..... Great manager, No wonder the pub is empty
I used to go to The Star regularly and it was always a great night out. I went there with friends recently and see it has changed hands yet again and I was really disappointed at how grotty it is now. The regular bar staff seem to have stayed and they were good, as they always were, but it was really unclean and it's not as busy and lively as it used to be. The sofa's wouldn't look amiss in the local tip - the inners are all falling out all over the place and the place was just ... dirty. A shame as it used to be such a good pub to go to. Ah well, there are other good pubs in the village to go to!
Did a pre Xmas crawl in Ewell and this was the most popular of those we visited particularly the festive ale. The layout is a bit odd - when we arrived a family with young kids occupied the area around the pool table while the other room at the back was empty - probably due to the draught from an open outside door presumably the smokers exit to the garden.
Hi I have also used the star for the past 10yrs and have seen its ups and downs, the present lady is trying her very best to make a go of it..although the morons still seem to creep in who cause trouble i dont think they are the complete answer to the problem. I would say the remedy is the strength of the lagers being sold [absolutely lethal]once upon a time the pub had a medium rated lager and you never saw any trouble...i advise the brewers to take a good look at this becausemyself and alot of people i know dont use the pub as often as we once did because of this.

Not the same lovely little pub since the smoking ban can in, the garden is far too enclosed, but the effort was made.

Excellent pub - atmoshphere greatly improved since new manager has taken over. Lovely beer and great food and the bar staff are fantastic - also very hot barmaids that are worth checking out....
i've been drinking at the star for a number of years and i've seen managers come and go, the star has changed hands this year and it had its fair share of problems in the past but from my eyes this has just about stopped. Having door staff is a good idea over the weekends as its stop's the scum that has been coming in and starting these problems, some people think having door staff is off putting!! i've heard and been told by people that drink in the star (before the door staff arrived)said "WHY DON'T THEY HAVE BOUNCERS"? to stop this when all the trouble was around, GUESS WHAT they got door staff and they still all complaining, the manageress is doing a super job and i like to see some of you running a pub? She just can't win. regulars do look after the star including myself and will not see the manageress and staff being hurt in anyway these people have helped greatly in dealing with any fore seen trouble making the star a more relaxed, environment, well done to the star.

A tardis of a pub - is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Nicely decked out, beer's good and the music evenings are great. Unfortunately the whole thing is ruined by thugs masquerading as bouncers. These surly black-shirts guard the pub like a prison camp and destroy the whole tone of the place. Little wonder it's half empty when other pubs in the village are heaving. I know they've had problems with fights but I don't think they've got the right answer there.
Hey, I've worked at the Star since just before Christmas 2006, and I have to say I love it! We have great bands that play, my personal favourite is SHOOTER! (I'm sure the regulars already know that!)
All the rest of the bar staff are a great laugh! And the guvnor Vikki is a brilliant boss!
We got 100% two times in a row in our make peoples day examinations, that can only be good!
Check it out!
Damian

i went to the star with my girlfriend on sat night and we had the best time we have had for a long time, live music was fantastic. well done to the staff.
Great locals, good service & fantastic bands. Defintely a place to visit on a regular basis.... apart from Fridays which are not so hot - Shame. All round good boozer though.
anonymous - 8 Mar 2007 15:34 |
Excellent for a night out. Live music is always top quallity (especially nite train) good service and some lovely barmaids. quiet in the day and busy at night. good allround pub.
Can be a pretty good little boozer when bands play on the weekend. A couple of the bar staff have a chip on there shoulder especially the rather loud fog horn that calls time on the weekend. Can they wait a couple of minutes for a female member of your party comes back from the loo before turfing you out? I do not think so. They take a group of 10+ peoples money all night and then treat you like dirt. Oh well we have learnt our lesson and are unlikely to be back

Went there myself after around 5 years - was really good atmosphere and very lively. Was good when it was the Loose Box. Will go back again.

First time we have been in this pub for 20 years and how pleasant to find a real pubby atmosphere. The 3 different beers we had were all in good condition and the staff and the locals seemed very friendly. One small suggestion...why dont they have a non-smoking area...maybe the first part of the pub when you come in through the door nearest the roundabout? Would have given a higher mark but the smokey atmosphere was bad.
ok pub could do with some smoke extractors but makes up for it with some very nice barmaids.
Saturday 2nd September sees ROAD DOG JACKSON at the The Star. This is the first time the rocking 6 piece have played at this particular venue, so come along and see what all the fuss is about
BOHO BRIDGE are back here on Sat 19 Aug Great rocking covers band with their fab female lead vocalist this band rocks big time don't miss em

This is certainly the best pub in the village, the staff are friendly and the beer is very well kept and the food is exceptional
Went there sat night nice place good staff but clientel left something to be desired, decided to leave after a ropey pint and the fights started

Me and my husband had lunch at this pub, which was absolutely fantastic. We heard there was going to be a live band performing on the saturday night, we decided to go to this and it was amazing, a very enjoyable evening with a crowd of extremely friendly people. The Landlady and bar staff were very down to earth and welcoming and i would definately recommend this pub, especially their live band evenings to anyone.
anonymous - 31 Dec 2005 00:52 |
I'd agree with the earlier comment re undesirables. Not sure why either as the William IV is their usual habitat. Shame 'cos it was the one remaining lively pub for the older crowd.
Nice pub bit crowded & smoky still nice landlay & staffbut getting a few undesirable people on lately not the best place at weekends.

I was in here about a week ago, its not my local but it soon maybe. It looks and feels much better since the refurb. Barmaid that served was lovely (short blond about 26-32) she was lovely. I will be coming in here more often for sure.
The Star is under new managment Angela Withers is the new manager. she has made some drastic improvments to the star! The pub has been closed for refurbisments for the last 2 weeks and it is re opening on the 25th Febuary 2005. The pub will then have a brand new look including Air conditioning which was despratly needed. The star has also re openned the kitchen and they are serving food 7 days a week. So check it out it will be well worth it!

Basically, everyting Jason says. Especially the staff. V foxy
This is a pub worth checking out if you find yourself in Ewell. However, it can get crowded and very noisy. They could also do with adding a draught lager than doesn't blow your brains out after 2 pints.
Parkhillian - 15 Oct 2004 13:46 |
Great pub. Others could learn a lot from this place. Freindly, cosy, non-threatening and a functional layout. has a small bar which gets crowded quickly, could do with a facelift inside though. The bar staff are top notch, and the landlady knows how to keep her beer.
steve - 30 Sep 2004 10:22 |
A nice pub, friendly staff. Looks small from the outside but inside there's lots of room. Watch out for pigeons who sit on the sign outside the front door and crap on your head.
Briony - 29 Mar 2004 13:17 |
Great pub, great atmosphere and absolutely cracking barmaids!!
you be a fool not to check it out!
Matt - 22 Mar 2004 15:01 |
This pub is fantastic! I know, I'm the Guvnor! Great mix of friendly drinkers, assertive, friendly, well trained and very attractive bar staff! Pool table, dart board, quiz machines, big screen showing regular live sport. All new Quiz night starting Sun. 4th April. Live music Wed.and Sat. Dj Paul gets the whole place buzzin' on Fri. nights. Chemical free Hofbrau lagers and badger ales a great plus! I am aware of a few downsides to the Star; Small bar, smokey at times and no enrty if busy. However the Upsides are; Additional bar and airflow system to be installed soon. As for the no entry thing, come early to avoid disappointment (200 capacity!!)To summerise: Great atmosphere, great staff, great beer, great music, it's a great pub!
jason - 19 Mar 2004 14:14 |
Excellent pub, management & staff very friendly, Nitetrain are Fantastic and they actually play every first saturday of the month - so check them out..... Yes the pub gets very busy but its that a good sign that its worth a visit.

The Star is the place to go in Ewell Village it has friendly people a good atmosphere. It plays live music on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a DJ every Friday night and they are about to start a quiz night on a Sunday. They have a band called "Nitetrain" who play on the last Saturday of each month and a new band called " Off The Rails" which is a extension of "Nitetrain" Who are Brilliant!! I work behind the bar in he pub and feel its a lovely place to work and socialise. Thanks to everyone who made nice comments about the bar staff....
Bar Staff - 18 Mar 2004 13:40 |
This is one pub that I always enjoy entering. Attractive staff, friendly guvnor. Nicely lit, it has a good atmosphere, fine ales, and is always clean.
Saturday Night music can be great here (especially Night Train) but the pub's clientelle has changed recently to include a slightly more rowdy (traveller type) that has a tendency to prefer Elvis and Bill Hailey sounds - great if you like Elvis though! A more serious downside is that when they get crowded they simply refuse admission and often turn customers away before 10:00pm.
Friendly staff though and refreshing outlook for a suburb pub.
Paul - 18 Feb 2004 00:54 |
By far the best pub in Ewell, great bunch of staff but can be hard to get served - but then they only have 2 hands to serve. Gets very warm in Summer but fab place in Winter.
Daisy - 3 Jul 2003 15:35 |
I like this pub - it has a friendly atmosphere and live music Thurs - Sun.
anonymous - 8 May 2003 16:56 |
Visited Friday (07/03/03). Started off O.K. and the Hofbrau does make it worth a visit. However Live music started about 9pm and I hadn't gone there to listen to Live music (No offence to the band), if you know what I mean. Also the bar area is tiny and by 8.30pm was 3 deep with people drinking (ie not buying then moving away). Once the music started it was time to move on up the road. Nice pub, but if you don't want live music and 20 minute bar waits I'd avoid it when a band is on.
gets 7 from me mainly because it serves Hofbrau.
