user reviews of the Aletaster, Low Fell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After dining at Angelo's Trattoria in East Rainton (until very recently the Old Ships Inn but never made it onto the site) and having a very pleasant visit to the Three Horseshoes in Leamside (another one I have requested to be added), I concluded my Friday night's drinking in the Ale Taster. I last tried a visit in January, 2013 when it was closed. This time it was open. A decent enough local pub with seating situated around the bar and a smaller room at the side. Service was friendly. But the ales were nothing out of the ordinary - Sharp's Doom Bar, Wells Bombardier, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Purity Pure Gold, Anarchy Blonde Star & Woodforde's Reedlighter. I went for the latter. But all of the ales were fairly similar style and not really my cup of tea.

My new local and certainly the best pub in Low Fell. Reasonably priced and good selection (Strongarm ale particularly good). Also a dog friendly pub (not unusual to see many canine regulars, even on a Friday night !).

Was disappointed to find this pub closed on my Wednesday visit. A notice said it had been closed for health and safety issues. Not sure when I'll be able to pay a return visit.

Great old pub, the way pubs used to be and the way pubs should still be.
Fantastic range of ales and real cider, 14 hand pulls on last night, ended up with one hell of a hangover this morning.
Cant wait to go back.
A gem of a pub, 5 star from me

Grand pub worth a visit with a good choice of beers and nice atmosphere. Two televisions to watch sport. Friendly staff.

Service is quick and effecient, beer superb, only downside is the numerous tellies - why ? that said they are not turned up ludicrously.

This is a great pub. Its a throw back to how pubs used to be before franchises got hold of them and ruined them!
The beer/ale is very good, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is iviting and warm.
A visit is highly recommended.

Although I'm slightly bitter about the fact they forgot I had an interview for a job at this place, they keep the best ales in Gateshead - possibly Tyneside. Well worth a visit if you can ignore the tacky Newcastle United paraphenalia - or alternatively, just show your red and white stripes and maybe the landlord will take a hint.

Unfortunately, one of the most efficient barmen has just been forced out. Bummer. Great pub; great ales; great cellarman. The place is an oasis in the desert of shit that comprises the rest of Low Fell's pubs.

I love this place, but I wish to hell the landlord was turn the bloody TV off some of the time. Great beers that always well kept.

Great cellarman who really knows how to look after the ales. Great choice of beers. Wish to god the landlord -when he's there - would turn off the television when there isn't some kind of major sports event on...

In a good location, great ales, a nice cross section of people, always a very friendly welcome, great place to meet old and new friends, Landlord keeps a good pint, also a Toon Army supporter

Splendid watering hole. Loads of cask conditioned ales to choose from, and the landlord really knows how to look after them. Only one drawback, mild is a rarity.

A fantastic mixture of real ales makes this pub a treat for all bitter lovers. The landlord is a fanatic Newcastle fan, so football is an intrinsic part of the make up of this fantastic local boozer
