City centre pub, I visited twice on a Tuesday. Some people there around lunchtime, for a long time in the evening I was the sole guest, and they started turning off the lights at 22:10. Too warm in the room, even on a chilly day. Decent cask ales and some kegs. Several new ticks for me.

Quiet Wednesday night, the bar is not visible from the street, so you must take a leap of faith, but worth the leap. It feels more like a bar but there were 4 pumps on, Bankside Inspector Morse IPA, Harveys Wlid Hop, Woodfordes Volt IPA And Elgoods Puff (The Magic Dragon!).
Bank side was very good.

I was disappointed that no Oakham ales were on given that a review I had read somewhere led me to believe they would be. Nevertheless, a good beer selection was to be had including the tasty 'Half Wit' from local firm Three Blind Mice. Otherwise though, a tad disappointing and I'd echo a previous interlocutor in that the pub has a feel of a chain and the 'garden' is scruffy.

It's okay and the ale was good but it is pretty soulless and has the feel of a chain pub.

Not much atmosphere on the night I was in. Not sure why it was so empty because it was staffed by three very young, very enthusiastic barstaff and the beer - Wheeltapper's - was fine. It was the early evening so perhaps my timing could have been better. Definitely deserves a second visit.

Fine beer, great food and wonderful staff make this one of the oddest but most brilliant pubs in the area. There is a dichotomy here. By day the pub is relaxed, airy and quiet. At the weekends it's loud, brash and exciting. It really does have something for everyone. Live music on Sunday afternoons and regular beer festivals only add to the catch-all style of the Town house.

The Town House does a good job of having local beers on, at reasonable prices too. The pub is an unusual layout - you go up some stairs from the street level to the bar area, then it has a conservatory area off the back of it, and a large outside paved garden. In the evenings there's a DJ and a good atmosphere, though it gets quite loud and roudy at night. It's quite a fun place though.

Yes I can see what marc1013 means. If all the beers listed on the blackboard as available had been I would have been impressed but there were only two I think, from Buntingford and Elmtree. Service was attentive and the food was good and a big plateful.

Tried this pub one Thursday lunchtime because of its previous reviews.
Bare floors in a cold, sparse and semi-darkness atmosphere it didn't feel very inviting inside. With a lack of tables to eat at and with even less menus to look at I almost walked out.
When I questioned the "kid" behind the bar "Why is the menu outside different to the menu inside?" His reply was a very helpful "Dunno mate." I walked out.
A shame really because the beers looked very inviting. A good selection from Elgood, Nethergate, Buntingford and other breweries aligned the bar. As I say, a shame.

went in friday afternoon a couple of weeks ago. found the ale ok but i cannot climb stairs so well now so i found it diffcult to get into the pub

In reality this is more a bar than a pub but the ale quality is high and the three handpumps offer a changing range of well kept ales many from micobrewers. On my visit the Buntingford Western Pioneer was spot on ,Oakham JHB and GK brewed Morland Original the value option at 2.30.Lunchtime food also value orientated. On entering to the left is a pool table ,bar towards the rear with a large vertical drinking area with some high tables and stools.Conservatory set up with dining tables and large courtyard outside.DJ on Friday /Saturday evening until late ,so best avoided at these times unless you want the yute atmosphere.Beware on the way out ,steps are very steep after a skinful.

Best avoided like the plague Friday and Saturday after 9pm when the disco and screen wash drinkers get started. HOWEVER, go when it's quite and you may be surprised. There beer (3 or 4 real ales) is nearly always tip top (a little word in the bar staffs ears to say that it's not a speed competition when they are pulling a pint would be worth it). There is a good beer festival in the garden every july and whilst not my fave place I do pop in there to see what beer is on from time to time for a change of scene (most oftern before eating in the fab Indian restaurant "The Sylhet" over the road.

very busy when its a Fri/Sat night as all the vermin go to there from the pub across the road.We didnt even stay for a drink as I was being pushed in the back by some thick ratboy even though I couldnt go any further due to people infront of me.When we left people were queing to get in,thats sad.One in one out policy, best left for the locals who think that 'ooooeer Cambridge' is too much of a strange place for a better night out.
To be avoided.

I thought this place was an absolute mess. The food was the worst i had ever tasted and the staff were rude and very badly trained (if trained at all). I would rather starve than go here again. AVOID like the Plague!!!!...Go to macdonalds instead!!!

Strange layout but pleasant enough pub

Famed for late-night music, and also for its Oakham JHB

Great atmosphere on a Friday and Saturday night (late licence to 1am). Landlord is excellent fun. Reasonable pricing.

A bit odd-looking on the inside, but when the sun is out you could sit in the beer garden for hours.
