Visited The Jackdaw & Rook last week had a great night, The Jackdaw has everything from great food menu, good selection of both wine and larger, friendly staff, comfy sofas and a great selection of board games to entertain all kinds preferences I'll definitely returning next week

Got to be said nice place overall. I was put off the first time I went in here. The pint of Honeydew I had at first tasted a little off so I switched to pride. The pint I ordered wasn't pulled but was presented to me from a number that were sitting behind the bar. It tasted ok but was still a little off putting and I left after this drink. However the bar staff were really nice and the place itself was great so I went back another time, after a recomendation, and was pleasently surprised. Again the same friendly bar staff, again the same good set up and this time the beer was ok and pulled properly. I've gone back a couple of times since the first experience is the only bad one I've had great place.

Yet another Balham pub where the plasma rules... lazy sofa atmosphere and then they ramp up the volume when World Tiddle-winks Championships are on. Pool tables for people to surround and scream at each other inbetween screaming at the plasmas... NOT a place for a quiet drink.

This place must have had new management recently because its totally changed from the worm hole it used to be. The bar staff even came over to my table and asked me if I wanted another drink!!! what???? Is this the same place that used to have rude bar staff and be full of lonely locals talking to themselves. We came here last Friday for a quick pint before heading into the city, but ended up staying there to listen the music and chillin out with Jez a local DJ guy that we met

Freindly bar staff, good place to chill and you can play pool on proper tables.

This is a good place - sports on the TV, pool, table football and loads of comfy sofas mixed with standard pub tables and a few higher bar type tables near the front.

Balham is definitely on the up - the Clarence, the Jackdaw and the Duke of Devonshire backed up by bars like Blithe and Be at One.

At this rate we'll soon be able to shift the chavs at the Witherspoons down to Tooting and open up somewhere clean in its place

Before I place my review I should point out that I have only been here during the day.

For those of you who like Activity-Based Drinking this place is a great start. There are two pool tables which you pay for by the hour/half hour, table football, and darts. As for the beer itself, you get the usual selection. The Guinness was good, that much I can tell you. The staff were friendly, and I liked the layout of the place, particularly the living room-style area at the back. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come here unless I wanted to play some games, but it is a perfectly passable pub if you are passing.

Great pub! wicked, super, fantastic. I pulled the fittest bird of my life in here the other Friday. So you can understand why I rate it!

Pretty bog standard, too bright, and yes, a place to avoid on a Friday or Saturday.
I was told to take my flat cap off before going in. I find that a bit offensive. Obviously the bouncer thought the same about my hat.

Decent bar but who the hell chose the artwork on the walls. It's horrific !!

Pool table and footy make up for it.

Good place to wander down to and watch the football/cricket. Bar staff usually friendly and the manager's pretty sound. Decent selection of beers and the food's a bit special.

I'd guess it's somewhere to avoid on a Friday/Saturday night

Nice little place, full of young females who fancy themselves more than the male trendies who inhabit this place too. A good selection of beer and your typical food that's the same wherever you go now. A bit too bright for my liking, but I'm a fussy prick.

6/10.

Went there on a Thursday night, seemed very quiet not much atmosphere. You have to book the pool tables by the 1/2 hour which is quite strange and doesn't allow you to be spontaneous.

Cracking place. Lively pub, but still manages to feel like a welcoming pub rather than one of the souless bars in and around Clapham. Plenty of fun with darts, pool and table football.

nice atmosphere, feels like being welcomed in someone's livingroom. sunday roast above average. will definitely go back!

What a shame could be a great pub but v/ poor staff not interested in customers. Drinks ug,,, v/cold bitter + we odered 3x JD & Coke. We were given 1/2 pint of coke with ice & lemon without being asked. Very poor staff. The Pool tabbes were not the english type they had the larger US type balls. What a shame this could be such a good pub with just a little more attention to detail. The table fotball seemed good but poor lighting made it a pain. Get it sorted and this would be a pub I and my friends would return to over and over.

very cosy. cool couches. foozball table good fun.

staff tonight were a bit out of it. took a while to attract their attention, even though was only one waiting to be served. one of them went off to clear tables without checking if anyone was waiting: v/annoying. they looked pretty young, perhaps they weren't fully trained yet. if so, important to watch your staff closely and get them to be more attentive. ashtrays and 8-balls behind the bar can wait. beer wasn't poured very well (was nice though)

love the artwork and atmosphere. will be back.

A lovely spacious modern pub with character. Two pool tables, pinball and table football with A great selection of ales, lager and wine, and plenty of big sofas to chill out on. And there's some excellent live jazz on sunday evenings, a great way to end the weekend.

Good pub, but they need to sort out the satellite receiver which keeps cutting out/breaking up during the football...
Jez - 17 Apr 2004 17:55
Perfect pub for a pint, game of pool and chilling out on the sofa to watch the footy.
