Fundamentally a restaurant with pub residue round the corner. Competitive seating in the summer, Staff are generally bubbly, on the day we visited it was helter skelter for tables, quite alot of tourists in fancy cars elbowing onto vacated tables ( all bright colours and showiness) so not altogether pleasant - but expected for the brand attached. worth it for the space, rural views and child friendly.

Tried it recently and very disappointed. Fish pie had two mussels and two prawns in it. Very dry and not value for money. My wife had char-grilled chicken that wa lost on a dinner plate. would have looked better on a saucer.
Farmers Arms very close to this pub is much better value.

Visited this pub whilst on vacation with 6 friends; we had read favourable reviews and wanted to check it out as we knew it was part of the Rick Stein group. Whilst the prices are reasonable we were thouroughly disappointed with the food and the service. The chips were all undercooked and the cheese provided with the ploughmans was tasteless. Two of the dishes that we had ordered were unavailable but we were not advised of this until the time everyone elses food was brought to the table. The side dishes of veg and salad where not brought out until we were half way through our mains. At the end of the meal we told the waitress how disappointed we were with the food and she merely replied that it was not their fault as we had ordered as three separate groups for the table. Would not visit this pub again for food and would not recommend to a friend.

On Valentines day I visited this pub for Sunday lunch together with my Wife, Daughter and her family. The Sunday roast was probably the best pub roast I have ever enjoyed. The beef was lean, tender and cooked to perfection (pinkish but not running with blood). Roast potatoes, onion gravy and a selection of five vegetables. The price was reasonable and there was no salad garnish that is so unsuitable with hot dishes but ubiquitous in most pubs these days. The beers were excellent too, considering they were Cornish ales!. The service was efficient and very friendly.
After returning home I found some holiday pictures from 7 years ago taken in the bar area. Apart from the colour of the walls behind the bar little has changed in this area.

Well done Rick Stein. Would you like to open a similar establishment in Bristol?

We visited in October 2009 having heard that this was Rick Steins's pub. We went on our wedding anniversary for lunch - the pub was very quiet, not at all busy, very friendly service. I had steak and my husband had steak & tribute pie, food was lovely, priced in line with other pub grub. We enjoyed it so much we went for a second visit taking our daughter & partner and also our dog (who was made to feel most welcome).
I can personally recommend the cornish rattler (local cider)

I don't think it's that popular with the locals! It was packed with seemed to be tourists when we went. More locals in the Farmers, up the road. Not the same pub it was before Mr Stein took it over, very commercial now: in, eat food, out. Obviously, being associated with Mr S, it now gets very busy for food.

Interior is very like his chip shop in Padstow, bare wooden tables and benches.

Beer was good, and (unexpectedly) not overpriced.

Didn't try the food, but prices were not overly expensive.

The pub has an idyllic setting and seems very poplar with the locals. We did eat there and the service was excellent. My main course (cheese ploughmans) was fine but the Lemon Posset dessert was very disappointing as it had a blackcurrant topping which smothered the lemon taste beneath, and it mixed all together, so in the end I had a blackcurrant dessert rather than lemon. I suggest if you want to eat here get there early as it get's very busy and the waiting time for food increases.

I didn't eat there - Food looked nice, but it was a 45 minute wait. Very popular pub in a nice location, the Tribute was excellent, and the staff were welcoming even though we were not eating. Full marks to the nice blond waitress who was rushed off her feet, and yet dealt with all requests/ demands in a professional and polite manner.

We went here for my birthday and it was a huge disappointment, Rick Stein should be ashamed to be associated with it. They had run out of prawns so could not have what I wanted, 'pint of prawns', they gave us some extra scampi instead, not really the same! U had scampi and chips which was at best very average, my husband had mussels and left half as they were so salty. My daughters chicken & chips was very dull too. Service was bad, half dinner not cleared and left out in the hot sun, very very disappointing pub.

Our first thoughts on entering this pub were disappointing. The exterior looks quaint and pretty but the interior is very rough and ready with one side resembling a school dining room with the tables laid out in a uniform manner. Definitely not a dining experience but pub grub. We found a table and realised that the menu had Rick Stein on the bottom. We were totally surprised as the pub had no airs and graces as you had at the Padstow businesses. The childrens offerings were ok but not great so we asked for a small portion of ham, egg and chips which they did and charged us less which was very obliging. My husband was surprised to only get lemon sole goujons for his money - no chips - only salad and mayonnaise. He was bored with them by the end of the plate. I had the steak pie which was lovely. I would say that the atmosphere was unrelaxing as the pub was so busy on a Tuesday night. The Rick Stein name obviously attracting the crowds when we were falsely attracted by the lure of the quaint exterior. Would I recommend it - yes out of season maybe if you are passing.

This was such a disappointing menu for vegetarians. Only polenta with a mushroom...no protein at all. how hard is it to add some lentils, beans or even just a few pine nuts. The waitress told us the polenta was very popular...well there wasn't any other choice!

Was here iin Feb and thought it must be a Stein operation now - wines not many could get easily and identifiably different food. Very good service and thankfully not changed too much. Popular on the Sunday we stopped by.

We visited the Cornish Arms yesterday for lunch after Rick Stein's makeover, and we left feeling VERY underwhelmed with the chips which were flabby, pale and undercooked. Surely it is not difficult to produce decent pub chips. The rest of the food was OK although the sausages that I had could have been cooked all over instead of just two brown stripes.
They were very busy and so perhaps the next time we go there will be an improvement in the food.

Pleasant pub serving a good pint of St Austell ale. I did not try the food but it looked very good. The landlord and his staff were friendly as were the locals. It did have a rather loud disco on the night I visited and most people sat outside to avoid damaging their hearing. Far better than the Farmer's Arms and not as intimidating.

Wonderful pub in a lovely place. An old family friend used to own it long ago; my Grandfather helped get the money together for him, so I'm glad it is still going strong.
I always go in when down West - albeit rather infrequenty - and find good service, people and beer.

Warm, welcoming friendly atmosphere, real open fire, fantastic (and courteous) staff - beer is good too (fresh and clean taste) Would highly recommend this pub as a great friendly local.

Not bad this. Definitely better than the Farmers Arms down the road, which felt vaguely threatening.

This pub is very good. I have visited many pubs around the world and you will never find better food that in this cornish pub

Nice place

A marvellous St Austell local serving well-kept beers from this excellent brewery. The more traditional pub in St. Merryn, The Cornish Arms is a must to visit. Good food as well.
