user reviews of the Crown, Waltham Abbey

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A relatively rare 11am opener on a Saturday. Traditional pub, small beer garden, nooks and crannies inside - including some comfy sofas.

As the first in, i had to suffer the first pull of the day. The McMullens Country Bitter was nowhere near as bright and good as discovered last month in Broxbourne.

Visited last night - still a perfectly-kept pint of AK and friendly welcoming staff. Couldn't ask for more than that!

Not been here for a while but I'm so glad I've rediscovered this pub. The lovely landlady Sallie has turned this place around and done it the world of good. A great selection of ales, all very well kept. Toilets are in immaculate condition, they actually smell great! This pub has a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere, bar nicely decorated and it has a very homely feel to it. Bar staff are chatty, smiley and always on hand to help. Best pub in the abbey.

Had my first drink in The Crown Waltham Abbey for a long time (the rude Guvner? Has vacated his post and taken his rudeness with him). What a pleasant Pub this is now. Smiling and efficient staff offering a selection of fine Ales. What a change I shall certainly be going back.

This pub is alive and well, with 2 guest beers as well as the McMullens AK and Country. Sky Sports still shown, well worth a visit if in the area.

Friendly welcome as my friend and I opened our "memory lane" crawl last night. He has learning difficulties, and the lady behind the bar (and the local with the sun tan - more about HIM later) were very easy going around him.

The sun-tanned local was a humorous chap who cheekily claimed to be "catching up with me" while I was buying a round of McMullen's AK which was perfectly well-kept and a refreshing quench following the walk up from Waltham Cross in the warm evening sun.

We sat in the beer garden which remains unchanged since our last visit and it was very peaceful and relaxing. Food is only served at lunchtime so we ate in another McMullens pub up the road later on. But I could not help notice the hunger-inducing aromas of curry that waft over the beer garden from the Indian restaurant next door.

I spotted a piano, but as we were on a crawl with another 3 or 4 pubs on our list did not examine its functionality. I wonder on hindsight if it is the instrument that had been removed from the Welsh Harp?

This is a pub run with the "will to live" despite quiet times. Whenever you visit Waltham Abbey DO make a point of visiting the Crown. It is a traditional pub that should be preserved, along with ALL the pubs along Sun Street.

Good Staff, But the Landlord sat just round the corner, he thought out of site, having a fag, picking his nose, Disgusting!!!!!

I am some what disappointed by some of the comments made below. After drinking in the Crown for 17+ years & working there for a number of those on a part time basis under various managers, I can hand on heart say that those who have made these scathing remarks still to this day frequent the pub when there is football on & also continue to make an incredible mess. Just as they did when I was behind the bar! How hard can it be to bring an empty glass back when requiring further refreshments? It certainly helps the staff out when its busy. As for moving the furniture around! Put it back where you found it when you leave! There is nothing wrong with the current manager. He is very polite, friendly & has a great sense of humour, but it is very dry, so be warned.

Yes Sally is still there as is Dot. They are both part of the furniture.

I have been (was) a regular for 6 years until recently, the landlord overstepped the mark more than I was prepared to accept. I'm disappointed but if rude, surly cusotmer service and an obsession regarding returning your empties (which I thought was the bar staff's job?!) or mvoing chairs is a warm welcome he can keep it

I get the impression he doesn't want the custom of his regulars unless they are over fifty. And he is there to run this pub into the ground prior to it being sold for housing.

I was sad to read the previous review. Isn't the lovely Sally still working there? and the other Barmaids whose names I have forgotten (Forgive me please). I hope mc mullens haven't balls up this pub they way they normally do.

Having been a regular of this particular pub for ten years im extremely disappointed in how badly this pub has fallen under its new clientele.

The landlord has no idea how to be courteous to his many customers who in the past have always been treated with good spirits and made to feel welcome by the more than friendly bar staff who have been serving in this establishment for many a year
(over ten i would wager as i have been attending this pub for that many years).

Yes i was once a big fan of this place but unfortunately its fall from grace has finally arrived and its a shame that mcmullens saw fit to ruin this fine pub by putting someone without a clue in management in charge.

bring back tel!!!

Began a crawl here with a friend on 22/8/06. All the previous commentaries are correct, this is a pleasant McMullens hostelry, and the landlord was certainly humorous as described by the previous reviewer on the 3rd Sept 2005. I suppose some of this was due to keeping my interest in a certain North London Premiership team starting with the letter "A" to myself!!!

No food on in the evenings, a shame as you are made to feel increasingly hungry by the delicious appetising curry smells wafting across from the curryhouse next door!

Superb pub, do visit!

If you must go out pubbing in Waltham Abbey, this is the only place to be recommended. An old fashioned and friendly boozer tucked away off the main high street, but worth finding.
Not recommended for non football fans especially non tottenham supporters.

As a Geordie I was made to feel most welcome by Tel and all of the staff. I have now, unfortunately moved away from the area but would recommend the Crown to anybody, especially newcomers to the area, where a warm welcome is guaranteed.

This pub, the second on our 'crawl' is warm, friendly and welcoming. The Mac's AK is on good form and the landlord is friendly with a good sense of humour aswell. The locals in here were friendly to us aswell, and the pub is to be recommended. The only reason they are not in the Good Beer Guide is Camra's purely political stance on using (or not using) cask breathers. If I were editor of the book, the pub would be in it.

Terry the Landlord is a hoot, Pub is a staunch Spurs pub but all are welcome. Quiz night is an event in it's self!
