A nice pub in the centre of Downe village. We visited on Sat., 26th Sept. after a walk from Gravel Hill. I had Bass (hand-pump) and my wife had something called Scotney followed by Whitstable Bay Pale Ale. All the beers were good and the service was friendly. Our meals were also decent.

Some very unpleasant, troublemaking characters turned up for Sunday lunch yesterday.

But enough about Nigel Farage's group. Some fun loving types in cheerful, comical outfits also appeared, and brought a real party atmosphere with them.

Whatever, if you find yourself in Orpington as I did, this is worth a run out, even on less entertaining days.

Had served poor ale for years, not sure when the ownership changed, but ale (in my case always Harveys) now excellent, also has daily newspapers and a nice atmosphere – currently scoring at a solid 8

Lovely country pub - won Bromley CAMRA pub of the year for 2014. Always has a Westerham ale or two on tap (the Summer Perle is to die for !!). Food is very good - ate there twice recently, and everything was piping hot and tasty

old style country pub. Four real ales on pump, Finchcocks was good, Harveys was just ok. Varied menu & quite reasonable prices but the roast beef was a bit tough!

Took the family here for sunday dinner. Lovely country pub with three log fires all roaring away. 4 cask ales including finchcocks, a local westerham brew. We tried the beef and lamb Sunday roasts which were both fabulous, best Yorkshire puddings we've had for ages. Daughters had a homemade steak and ale pie and a sea bass from the specials board which they were equally as complimentary about. Recommended.
(Lovely Christmas decorations also, we'll done, we will be back)

Three of us had Sunday lunch here on August 19th. My girlfriend and I were entertaining a friend from New Zealand,so we requested a window table by telephone. They had reserved the wrong table, but that was no problem as even at 1300,the place was nearly empty.
We asked the waitress how the lamb and beef were cooked as we prefer our meat medium-rare. She informed us that all the meat was pre-cooked! The plates of food looked less than appetizing, and looks did not deceive. Our overseas friend, somewhat of a foodie, declared the roast leg of lamb the worst she had tasted! The roast potatoes were truly terrible.
The cook told us that she had prepared the potatoes the morning before. Nothing to be proud of! Her attitude was totally dismissive of any critique. Please avoid eating here,as The Blacksmith's Arms is nearby in Cudham. No contest!

I too visited the Queens head yesterday great pub in lovely village bar snacks on bar, good beer, good company, clean pub what more can i say. On previous visits have been with the children and wife all made welcome and the children loved playing the selection of board games.

Heaven forbid that 'PissFlap' has anything to do with the new management, despite the remarkakable change in views. I think I'll wait for some more (evidently) independent opinions.

I used to avoid this pub in the past. Not now though. New owners and lovely new decor make it worth a visit. I went midweek two weeks ago, and the Adnams was top notch and the food (home cooked I believe) very good. Makes Downe village a worthwhile place to visit again

Has reopened (as a pub, not a mosque!). Called in today while walking in the area. The Adnams was good (one of 3 real ales).

I returned one lunchtime in November with 12 walking friends. We all had a meal and the varied selections were served in time for us to continue our walk in the afternoon. The beer went down well and the overall experience was enjoyed by all.

I visited this pub in June 2010 with my wife when on a walk. The Darwin Bar was most welcoming and quiet. A local was most enthusiastic about the pub and owners and we managed a quiet conversation without any intrusive music. I returned again in July when on a walk. and again had a good experience. I called in in October for lunch and a drink.
The food daily specials were varied and reasonably priced. Mine arrived quicker than I thought after reading the recent review.
There was a choice of 3 real ales and mine was good. The beer was a bit expensive but when taking the food price into account was less overall than I have paid elsewhere.
I shall be returning in November with friends.

Horrible choice of piped bar music playing over two loud speakers. If you want a quiet drink better to go to pub opposite.

Total disappointment!
Booked a table for 8 people for bank holiday dinner, with us all looking forward to it. Upon arriving, ordered some drinks (as we were early), which we found to be very over priced (so much so that we actually questioned the waitress thinking a mistake had been made). We sat at the table on time so no problem with that.
We waited at the table for approx 25minutes waiting to be served - in the mean time the people sitting on the table next to us decided to up and leave after waiting over an hour for the order and still not receiving it. We decided to go to the counter and order our food.
After a further 45 minutes wait, the food finally arrived. GREATLY over priced. ''Chicken Burger'' was a few slices of cold chicken in a bun that looked like leftovers from a roast dinner - NOT a chicken burger, and definitely not worth 9!!
Finally, upon us paying for the bill a 'steak meal' which we did not order was added - when we questioned it, there was slight attitude towards removing it from our bill, with the waitress saying it was ours, even though it was clearly not at our table nor had we asked for it.
Having read all the good reviews, we were looking forward to our meal but were very disappointed! Very over priced, poor quality, poor service, overall complete waste of time and money. Will not be going back!!

Well it has been 2 years since I have been to the Queens Head and that is only because I came back to Australia. I loved it so much there, great people and great environment, also dogs allound which is cool. Previous landlady carol made me so welcome along with the locals Rhea and Fatlin. I look forward to coming back to the Queens Head to see what the refurbs are like. A must pub to visit if you are in Downe Village : )

According to my local rag, this pub had been shut recently for refurbishments but is to open again on April 1st 2010. I don't go there often because of parking facilities but it would be interesting to see what changes there has been.

Went in for a quick drink - friendly and helpful staff, food reasonably priced, beer tasted good. Seemed like a real pub.

Stopped for a quick lunch before walking the dog on a Sunday afternoon, and could have stayed there all afternoon. Dogs welcome, good real ale on draft (Spitfire). A hearty Sunday roast (choice of chicken, lamb, pork or beef) was available with orders taken until 5pm.

As a veggie I went for a bowl of tomato and basil soup and they rustled me up a cheese sandwich which was generously cut from doorstops of fresh farmhouse-style bread. A welcome change to the usual meagre and stingy portions at most pubs these days.
The saloon bar was traditional with wood beams and complete with roaring real fire. The perfect spot to read the papers and relax.

Only downside was the jukebox which was a bit intrusive and not really in keeping but we were sitting below the speaker so maybe it's not so noticeable elsewhere in the pub. A car park is available at the rear. Definitely worth a return visit and I wish we had a local like this!

What a great pub!! the Ales are out of this world, the food is reasonably priced and also delicious and the staff are very friendly. Also any available girls out there may be interested to know that landladys gorgous, young, rich, real catch of a son is often drinking in the village side of the pub honing his pool and darts skills. don't be affraid to say hi....
LOCALKID - 25 Jan 2007 11:05
I agree with the other comments. It's one of the friendliest pubs in the area. The regulars, manager and staff all made us feel welcome when we visited for the first time recently and the Everard Tiger was excellent

What a gem of a pub. Great atmosphere, the locals are very friendly, delicious food. Worth the trip. Beware the horses head!!!

A very friendly pub on the very edge of Greater London. Good country walking 100 yards from the door and a bus service to Bromley South BR. Food is excellent and the real ale is well kept. The several small drinking/eating rooms give the place considerable character.

Friendly staff - good food - excellent real ale !
Need one say more ?

Another splendid evening at The Queens Head! Guinness Extra Cold very passable, London Pride in condition & Youngs like nectar. Mini Cheddars ample and sufficient. Landlord's Jack Russell as swwet as ever. Worth the detour from Bromley / Orpington!
