Oh dear, why did I ever go in, I loathe sheps beer and they only had whitstable bay available anyway - and the decor is just grim unless you like cold/spartan/characterless...........UGH

This used to be a friend's local, and I've shared a good few pints with him here in years gone by. I recently dropped in once again, and found the place almost unrecognisable. What was once a comfortable, old-fashioned, rather down-at-heel local boozer has been 'modernised' into something cold and rather soulless, dominated by a pool table at one end and a TV set at the other. It was almost deserted when I was in, but I guess it gets quite a lot of student trade at other times.
Only cask beer on was Kent's Best; I'm not a great Sheps fan, but this was very drinkable - though not sufficient to lure me back without some other good reason to be there.

I've visited this pub a few times recently and have been pleasantly surprised. The beer is excellent. The manager and other staff are very friendly. The pub is newly decorated in a style reminiscent, perhaps, of some smart Italian restaurants, but very comfortable.

In this very local pub for the first time last week. I am middle aged and I like the place. people from all walks of life and age. I was made to feel very welcome by the very polite manager, sort of place you can go into on your own and get chatting to the locals.
I didnt try the food but it did look good served by a friendly looking young lady.
The ale was well kept and served correctly.
On the whole a good friendly local pub. I will be trying the weekends,I'm sure it willbe fun.

Lively atmosphere, great music, a total mixture. Drinkers were friendly however drunk. Bar staff was very friendly and on top form. What with the staff and the people in there, the atmosphere, i would say this is what i would call a proper boozer. When Im in the area next, i will be coming back here!

loud bar staff who seem to want to see to their mobile phone befor the waiting customer. A few long faces at the bar and plenty of very drunk people. obviously there isn't a dont serve drunks rule in this pub.
I dont think they ask youngsters for I d and I'm sure the toilets are used for more than just peeing.
Good Ales, good lively pub not for the faint hearted. Would not take a chiled or my wife in there, but great for a mates night out. If you want a no rule get out your head pub this is the one in Tonbridge.

Chav city.
If you are not one you'd be advised to steer clear. The reviewers below are clearly not the target market (eg they can write).
Like WilliamBonny I am a local, and I have been in the Foresters exactly twice in 30 years. Not an experience I am likely to repeat until I buy myself an England footie shirt, have my head shaved and lose my brain.

A grim hole with grim people.

Can fully imagine the incident below happening.

This is my local and I live 30 seconds walk from it. Went in there with my girlfriend 2 nights ago for a drink and to watch the football that they were showing. Once we'd sat down we overheard a couple of the regulars complaining to the bar staff that they wanted to watch the rugby. They were told that they couldn't because we were already watching the football (which was already on the big screen when we came in). These 3/4 regulars (all aged mid 40's) then spent the next 45 minutes abusing, baiting and intimidating myself and my girlfriend. Needless to say we didn't rise to the bait and left at half time.

It's sad that I have rated my local so poorly, but the place is only going to be as good as the people that frequent it, so unless the management does something about these low lifes then quite frankly it will struggle.

oops disregard below - thought it was the one in Tunbridge Wells.

Closed and re-opened as Jaks. Then closed again and is now called Murphys. Only open in the evening.

Not exactly Shep's finest establishment, but my experience of the place is not as bad as some of the comments suggest.

This is my favourite pub, Bee is great and once you get used to the regulars their cool too (even if they do take the piss out of me being a goth)

Scary place. Full of blokes you don't want to f**k with. Staff and booze pretty good - not bad if you want to go out for a six hour bender and get totally smashed.

Full of geezers who won't move out of the way for you to get to the bar or even pass in and out of the pub. An absolute nightmare.
