user reviews of the Oxford, Manchester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visit this pub far too often. It's a little bit tatty but the quiz is awesome and they always seem to have an interesting range of beers on. The ale changes pretty regularly so I guess they go through quite a lot. I've not eaten here but it looks alright and pretty cheap. It gets rammed during the day so you might struggle for a table. Oh and theres jugs of tap water on the bar so you don't have to put up with the pitiful look on the bar man's face when you ask, unless you want ice in it.

The Oxford is the only place in Manchester where the bar staff (think it was the duty manager of all people) have been so rude that I have left vowing never to return again. He started off by saying he wasn't going to serve people in our group (basically because they were enjoying themselves when he was having a bad day!). No one was drunk. Once he realised this himself he served everyone. He then decided it was his duty to antagonise everyone in our group for the rest of night, among other things, saying we were bein too loud when we were talking amongst ourselves quietly about the pub quiz!. This guy was so stressed he had facial twitches. He needs to get life because he's obviously a pathetic loser and he totally ruined our night when no one was acting out of order in any way! Would not recommend this pub to anyone!

Yes sorry, let me quantify my comment.
The bar does indeed support three , possibly four handpumps, but only one was on during my visit.
I'm not sure I would use the adjective, tasty, for the one that was, but I fully appreciate that I may not have caught The Oxford at its best on my mid week afternoon visit, and therefore bow to the greater knowledge of the poster below.
And I wont bore you about my views on a Cask Marque accreditation.

I thought this place was a Wetherspoons when I walked in, fairly big expanse of a building that looked like it was formerly something else other than a pub, plastic food menus on every table, lots of cheap drinks offers everywhere, and a chain pub feel. But the lack of real ales gives it away as being some other chain.
I guess this place is very good if you are a student (especially one in the close by halls) or a worker at the MRI.
But I am neither, so probably wont bother to come back. But for the rest of you, enjoy, especially the cheap drink offers

Can take the previous comments on board. No mature drunks this time round.A pub that is obviously part of some sort of chain;like a Goose. Two young female barstaff were putting up a super show;as usual understaffed.Guinness cheap and excellent.Food looked decent as well.A student centred place, but engaging nonetheless. Will give it a go,when visiting the Whitworth gallery.

Wow, the professionalism of this place knows no boundries!!! I've just been short-changed 10 from them after giving a 20 pound note to them (I bought a pint of Hobgoblin and a pint of Becks [for my mate] ) I disputed this with the staff and showed them a bank statement and the STILL REFUSED to give me the money they owe me. The female bar-tender there even admitted to me that the books don't always balance and said to me earlier in the night that "They even appear to be 10 pounds down". Professionalism at it's highest. I've been drinking at many places in and around Liverpool (where I'm from) and I have NEVER had this problem before, to say I'm dissapointed is an understatement. It's pathetic.

I work in the pub and the last message pretty much sums up the day to day trade we get... were still trying to find the switch that turns off the crazy people magnet

The best/worse you can say is that it's mediocre. The bitter is usually uninspired so I'm stuck with drinking Wife Beater. Having said that, the food, for a pub chain, is pretty good, the staff are excellent (if understaffed - always one less than they need), it's very reasonably priced and it's not the Kro Bar.

As a bonus, you occasionally get the odd alkie hopped up on hospital soap who's somehow got his internal pub satnav to guide him in there. Bets can be placed with colleagues about which direction he will inevitably crash to the floor. North, south, east, west? Round and round he goes...

Good cheap drinks and quite cheap food, and you can get a student discount card for only a quid, so it's all good. Handy for students wanting a bit of a pick-me-up between lectures.

Cheap beer, decent standard of pub food, friendly atmosphere, pleasant staff. Have been here every weekend since I relocated to watch the football, always seems to be a lot going. Unpretentious Studenty type place on the edge of Manchester city centre.

friendly, consistent staff and management, good doormen and on most nights either sports tv or a good selection of music. Leans toward the more modern drinking preferences but good prices for decent wines and premium lagers, not eaten there yet but the food and prices look tempting. Been goingg there for about three years now and travel about 6 miles to get there - worth the journey - it never lets us down!

The kind of place where your always looking for a chair as you feel uncomfortable standing...But the atmosphere feels better..Handy for Uni gigs...or needing a restorer after visiting MRI casualty!

really nice pub, my local. Try out sundays...vodka and a nice mixer for 1--we're talking cranberry juice and redbull! The posh side of student living!

A lot nicer than it was before the refurb. Nasty highchairs downstairs though.

It's reopened now as the Oxford. It's not a patch on what the Hogshead used to be. But that said, it's more pleasant than what the Hogshead had become. I probably won't be going back, but if you're not fussed about real ales or whatever, it's not too bad. It will almost certainly fill to bursting point with students over the next week or two.
Chris - 21 Sep 2003 22:53
Then how do you explain the "Closed for refurbishment" signs that have been all over it for the past two weeks?
Tom - 12 Sep 2003 14:03
Closed? We were in there on Saturday night!
Nige - 2 Sep 2003 21:08
Currently closed, it's going to re-open in mid-september as The Oxford. And it'll be worse than it was before, there's no doubt of that.

Topper is indeed correct. It's gone waaay downhill recently. Having spent much of my time as a student in this pub, I would now actively avoid it. Shame. It used to be so good.
Chris - 20 Jun 2003 23:20
This place used to be decent when it first opened. Since then, it's gone downhill a lot.

The large selection of well-kept real ales is gone, and the furnishings are now pretty shabby.
Topper - 6 May 2003 17:45
Ok in non-student seasons. Agree with comment that it is a bit false.
Ronnie R - 24 Apr 2003 16:08
I spend far too much of my time in this pub - okay, it's a chain, but it's generally got a decent selection of real ales on, and now all the students have gone it's nice and quiet too :)
