After lunch and a couple of beers in the Ship Inn we took a short walk to the Anchor Inn.

This is an imposing building with plenty of history including a reported haunting by a man and he's dog. This inn and former seaman's mission is apparently 450 years old.

Full of naval memorabilia including a large amount of plaques with names of naval warships. Timber panelling, low beams and snugs, mind your head if you're taller than 5ft 10" in certain areas like on the way to the gent's toilets!

The old Seaman's Mission part of the pub is a restaurant with the original inn being more of a pub with comfy chairs as well as the snugs.

6 hand pumps with a good mix of national and local ales. My pint of Tintagel Castle Gold @ 3.8% was extremely good. Ordering at the bar is done via 3 small service areas, getting to see the pumps can be a little trickey.

A very nice pub and restaurant, the seafood menu & mussels look really good , lots of history and finally a lovely setting, both pubs in Cockwood are worth a visit.

Lovely pub Ndlocation. Good selection of beers, but pricey.
Great interior, well worth a visit (with a large wallet).

Yes indeed this is the touristy pub of the two but it is easy to see why! Lovely setting by the harbour and if you get a seat outside you can enjoy your beer as you watch the trains speed across the bridge and embankment! There are little boats in the harbour and it is all very pleasant! We didn't eat but they were doing food (all day during the summer by the looks of it) but we managed to get a table on the front patio (next to the old red telephone box and the old red post box !!) so we could watch the trains and on the little narrow lane - the cars; pedestrians and cyclists pushing for position! The pub is a rambling old building with thre or four rooms and some interesting bits and bobs around the walls etc., but it's main feature - on a warm sunny day - is the outside seating where we enjoyed Tintagel Brewery "Gold" whi ch was just prefect as it was light hoppy and very refreshing. They also did Dartmoor beers as well as a house beer from Otter (Otter Amber actually!). The buses - which are very frequent during the day stop and pick-up at the end of the lane on the main road.

A lovely setting over the harbour and a real gem of a pub.
The trouble is that it is a expensive busy tourist hell hole.
I wish i had visited during the week slightly out of season so i could have appriciated it a bit more.
It is expensive too being a Heavitree pub in a great location.
My ale was good and would visit this place again as both inside and out are a real treasure.

7/10

Splendid old boozer. Alcoves indoors and tables outdoors, overlooking the little harbour. Three or four ales on, of which mine was very nice. The plates of food being shipped past looked enormous though I didn't sample it. Our mate made us walk for an hour to get to this place and I can fully understand why he prefers it to anything Dawlish has to offer.

Lovely looking pub in a wonderful setting, but have to agree this is a place mainly for those eating, with a table reserved. Has never had much space for drinkers. But this is due to the layout of the building, which I am glad to say, has not been altered to modern tastes. I.e large standing area to maximise the number of drunken teenagers you can pack in......
Visited for the first time in ages and found little changed. Nice pint of Gales Seafarer. Shandy chica enjoyed her shandy as well.

Visited on Friday afternoon, had an iffy pint of Otter Head which was changed without question for an excellent pint of Otter Ale. Nice location and a very interesting building. Had the steak and ale pie which was huge and made very good eating.

the Anchor, well, what a gem, for us Real Ale questers it was a great find...providing you have an afternoon sesh.. I know this is Beer in The Evening, but unless you're eating, and have therefore booked a table, you will be treated like a second-class citizen during the evenings. We tend to use pubs for drinking in, strange as this may seem... We counted 36 tables, restaurant AND bar, and every one was reserved, this occured on four different occasions, so now it's aftenoons only. A great shame, as it is a beautiful pub, in a beautiful location.

Fantastic setting, but first impressions count, there is a sign saying something about no children allowed in the bar - however one of the bar staff clarified this as babies in pushchairs are not permitted. The menu is too extensive, it took several minutes to find the non fish dishes on the menu. The menu is far too complicated. Going for a non fish dish was for some of our party a bad mistake - they ordered a pasta dish whish was almost a tin of tomatoes poured over some pasta - too much tomato taste and very little else. I had the gurt big pie, which was excellent. The barman / waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable, the service was good, prices were average. If you're a fish lover, or you enjoy sitting outside a pub by the water, then this place is a must, when in the Starcross Area, otherwise, there are probably better places to eat.

I would spend the rest of my days sitting in The Anchor if I could.

To much on the menu was the first thing i noticed and a very severe looking woman who turned out to be the landlady. Beer was good with a decent selection. Abbot ale is always good. Food was good too but took me nearly an hour to decide.(i may just be too fussy but over 20 differnt mussel sauces is a bit much) I shall return however.

been there more than a few times, I was surpirsed to see so many negative comments to be honest. They do an excellent seafood selection, which I tend to have every time I go there. Will be there a ain soon, so I will report back.

Lovely old pub, idyllic location Pity about the service If you visit in winter you may be fortunate However in summer the majority of staff are unfriendly and unhelpful, and often rude Cannot recommend this establishment!

First went to this pub in about 1997 and boy was it good. Been four or five times since but wont be going again. It has really gone downhill. Dont know what went wrong but needs to do something quick.

Dissappointing. Earmarked this for a second visit after calling for a drink a few weeks ago. Olde worlde, low beamed pub with plenty of atmosphere. Most tables reserved so lucky to get seated. Decent range of drinks and reasonably friendly staff (better staff a few weeks ago). Ordered food, didn't have to wait long but it didn't live up to the popularity of the place. I had Game Pie, the game had obviously escaped, under done veggies.Wife had Gammon which she said was nice but difficult to decide what the accompaniment was. Big let down when we had made a special effort to return. Car-parking appalling by the way.

Went there for a midweek meal (Wednesday night) after phoning to confirm first.
the telephone was answered after a bit of a wait and the person was not that friendly or helpful, but did say that we should be ok for a bar table.
On arrival, again the person behind the bar was not the most friendly person in the world, terse, short, abrubt but he did do his job.
After choosing from the menu (Waaaaay too many choices) the food was served quickly and by a friendly waitress.
The food was very good and very tasty. No critism of the food at all.

Went there for food and a beer on a Sunday afternoon. I thought, because of the reputation, that the food would be excellent. Unfortunately it wasn't, and all the fish dishes that we had were from the freezer, and my cod was thin and very greesy, I was left with the feeling that you have when you have eaten too much old deep fat fryer fat!
Far too much stuff on the menu, much better to have fewer things that are freshly cooked.
Also it's hard to find a seat, not surprising as it's a small pub, but it seems odd to close nearly half the pub at 2 as it's the restaurant bit, when the food is served all day.
The atmosphere of the pub is still great though.
markjcockram - 28 Mar 2007 16:52
food is going down hill very quickly.

Best fish food in Devon. Don't catch the train to Exmouth though as it is on the other side of the river, boats do not run afte 31st Oct until spring

An excellent inn with great views from the veranda a perfect place to watch the sun go down with a drink and a meal. Always busy due to its local reputation and the fine ale and food. If I could live anywhere in the world on retirement it would be cockwood.

Old pub overlooking small Harbour. Good food (Lots of seafood), good Real Ale. Small restaurant and Bar area. Gets busy in summer.
