Seems to be open again as of end of Jan 2015. They're booking bands too, which is a good sign.

A dreadfully overpriced pub , ridiculous really (r they in central London), God paid less for a beer in the Savoy bar! Awful ripoff of a place. A very lazy pub with idle staff. Shame really as nice location. Have to agree with others i'd stretch myself to beat 0/10, a real ripoff and staff r so poor. Company summer party seeks location??? This place is a big NONO!!

This is my new local after moving to the area. Called in on a Saturday lunch time & thought the staff, service and place itself were good. No real ale that I could see however & it did seem slightly pricey. Overall though would go again, looks busy in the evenings on my walk home from work.

That loathsome Manager with zero social skills still works here. Over-priced, unfriendly and empty. 1 out of 10.
hertsboy - 28 Feb 2012 13:35
Read some of the recent previous comments and I don't get it!! I recently moved to the area on the other side of town from this pub and some work colleagues suggested going here. I LOVE IT! The staff were friendly and the manager came over to have a chat recognising i was a new punter. He was really friendly and once i'd told him i'd only just moved back to St Albans he recommended other places to have a drink, eat, dance etc - it was great! I've been back a whole bunch of times since and i've pretty much made it my local, despite passing other pubs on route. Most place in town are bland chain pubs, this place has real character. I want to make this clear - BEST BURGERS EVER!!

Totally agree with previous post. I stopped coming in her months ago. Over-priced, unfriendly and dead.
hertsboy - 25 Mar 2011 10:39
Posted a review of this place a while back being vaguely positive. Not sure why. The place is horrible.

If the ludicrous prices and complete lack of atmosphere aren't enough to put you off, the surly, rude and dismissive staff (particularly the bar manager) should do it. Have stood at a nearly empty bar on a few occasions now being ignored by the bar manager who chooses to serve his cronies instead.

My other half has also had rude comments thrown at her by the manager - 'why are you having a drink on your own? No mates?' 'why are you buying your boyfriend a drink? That's his job' etc etc.

If the place was packed to the rafters every night then the arrogance might be understandable but the place is near on empty most nights.

It's not hard to see why.

I was in briefly last night , never seen it so dead, it was the girls behind the bar who looked miserable to me, went back to The Blacksmith which was really busy with a great band on.
Henners - 27 Nov 2010 10:28
I was here last night with a couple of mates.... The grumpy bar manager was throwing glass bottles away in an attention seeking way. He's no Gil. don't know why I bother really.
hertsboy - 27 Nov 2010 10:22
It's alright in here I suppose. Staff are very attentive and the food is very good, but's just, well, a bit bland. The beer choice is pretty poor too (and a bottle of Leffe will set you back around 453)

Bascially, apart from weekend evenings, it's always a bit quiet with no real atmosphere to speak of. The acoustics are shocking, meaning you often struggle to hear what someone opposite you is saying if there's a larger group nearby.

They should look at somewhere like The Alexandra in Muswell Hill in terms of how to improve the atmosphere. Chuck a decent jukebox in there (northern soul, garage rock etc), scruff it up around the edges and you're away.

We went here a few Fridasys ago. There was a terrible band palyind. we didn't stay lon.
hertsboy - 20 Nov 2010 11:03
Went in last Thursday. Good selection of beer, attentive service even though there was a function on! Will return at some point even though its the wrong side of town for me.

I liked this place. On a busy street where you can't park but to walk to is worth it. Nice decor and good food and beer. Mixed clientelle of younger and middle aged. Get busy in the evineings at weekends. A good pub.
sliderman - 3 Oct 2010 12:37
went in on a Tuesday night - not the busiest but nice atmosphere. This is a comfortable bar - leather sofas, lots of dark wood. Upmarket/trendy feel about the place

Food was great (burgers really good as are the chips)

London Pride not the cheapest and the only option but tasted good. After all its not really a boozer

tozerplan - 1 Oct 2010 12:31
empty here last night...perhaps not as good as some say.
hertsboy - 18 Sep 2010 12:08
John the landlord has really got this place working. Burgers are great and roast at weekend very good value.

Garden area is lovely and excellent use of the space available.

Yes it's a little more expensive for drinks than Weatherspoons, but pay a little more and you get something nicer.
Zidanny - 5 Aug 2010 14:55
had a great sunday roast here again can't belive thers not more people eating here
mccorby - 4 Apr 2010 14:47

mnorth - 4 Jan 2010 18:04

mccorby - 20 Dec 2009 15:31
More expensive bar than a decent pub. Still, decent confy sofas, decent food, papers available. Good for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
RedHarvest - 18 Dec 2009 11:48
We turned up here on saturdy night to find the 'pub' closed due to a private party! This is not a public house but a private club. It's expensive - about 3.50 for a pint, they charged 40 for entry on New Years eve a couple of ears ago...who paid that???

I shan't go in here again. I shall email them at [email protected]
hertsboy - 2 Nov 2009 11:49
Good pub, burger offer very good value!!!
realaleandrealfoodman - 14 Sep 2009 19:45
This has a good atmosphere on a Friday night. Good for if you like lager or Pimms(!). Worth a look anyway.
seasiderMM - 3 Mar 2009 22:25
sherminator, read your other posts. I agree with a lot of what you've said.
hertsboy - 21 Nov 2008 11:10
I always liked this place but most of the people drinking their are a mile up their own rear ends and the beer is very expensive (suspect it is the dearest in St Albans?).
Sherminator - 13 Nov 2008 22:10
Seems to be getting back to it's best under the latest round of management. Good, friendly bar staff, decent food, great outdoor area and a few big comfortable sofas if you get down there early enough. Well worth a visit, and a late licence which is always a bonus.
artvanderlay - 4 Apr 2008 15:00
Oooh, the manager, Gil, has got an admirer?
Did anyone pay 40 to go there New Years Eve?
hertsboy - 4 Jan 2008 11:29
I've been here a few times and i really like it. Never knew it before the new management so i can't comment on the change.

The food is excellent, the garden lovely in the summer and is well provided for my smoking friends. A good selection of drinks, bar service friendly, and ladies....well i'm presuming he is the manager, but the tall guy working there is totally lush! (seems to have a girlfriend though, wouldn't just know it!)

sarahbeanz - 8 Dec 2007 13:18
This pub is charging 40 for entry on New Years Eve ...a RIP OFF on the grandest scale!!!!
hertsboy - 24 Nov 2007 15:39
Quite a good pub in this pub. Friendly bar staff and manager and beer garden on the plus side. a bit yuppy-ish on the negative side.

Great Pub, great Atmosphere, Great Bar Staff & Food a great and lively place for either a quiet or kick'in night.
kieranc - 2 Aug 2007 18:59
Went last night and was quite impressed. Fairly busy but got served without much of a wait, good selection of lagers and the garden's looking good.
grilledsardines - 22 Jul 2007 15:22
Much better than before. Friendly service and a good atmosphere.
enterbluebottle - 26 Jun 2007 11:39
The glory days are returning! Neil is back in the kitchen, great food. Bar is lively and busy again, garden has been revamped and looks great.
Sherminator - 10 Jun 2007 21:54
These reviews are outdated; recently changed management and the place is great for a few drinks at the weekend, bar staff always a joy and the atmosphere is nice and lively but never too overcrowded and on the 1 occassion i ate there it was very good quality. Ladies - If you like a bit of bubbly, try out the Great Western sparkling wine, in my opinion superior to a lot of real champers and gets you yummily sloshed, one of the reasons i am a regular!
charlieblonde - 5 Jun 2007 10:44
Thank you for your comments Rashers, you are always welcome in our pub although I would like to know what you have been getting up to in our toilet.
TheDominator - 28 Jun 2006 11:05
I drinks there a bit. The place has gone down hill since Scott left but I think Joel is very nice. Know him from the previous establishment he ran, my old local out the Redbourn Road. The food used be lovely. The toilets are nice, lots of room in the cubicle. Nice cistern and soft toilet roll. I likes the garden, pity about the neignbours. The owner is a nice chap, very generous and with a sharp fashion sense.
RashersOKane - 26 Jun 2006 18:57
This place is a better bar than it is a Restaurant.

Stopped eating here now as the food quality dropped a while back when it changed hands. Still good for drinking and it has a smoking area under canvas inthe back yard.

Baw_Heed - 18 Apr 2006 20:26
Went here a couple of months previously and had a superb roast dinner. Returned recently and OH DEAR! Atrocious food. Looked very much like the barman who served us the previous time was cooking the food. Absolutely awful roast with no roast potatoes for crying out loud! People complaining left right and centre. This place has gone right downhill and will not be returning. Not recommended.
anonymous - 27 Mar 2006 10:47
A good atmosphere, without doubt. I was a bit disappointed with the choice of drinks - no beer available - but the bar snacks looked quite tempting. Bar62 gives regular money to the local Samaritans, which is nice. Overall 7/10 and I'll definitely be returning.
anonymous - 4 Feb 2006 13:36
The food is good but expensive, the chice of beer more limited than under the previous owners but still worth going to - sunday to thursday if you're over 35 - weekends it is full of people drinking pre mixed cocktails and green "shots".
twangothan - 15 Jan 2006 18:29
Still one of the best atmosphere pubs in St Albans if you are in your 30s / 40s and much better since they made it non smoking recently. Food quality still good though not as much choice as when the previous owners were here, and prices are high (as much as Darcys down the road which is miles better quality) but I guess they can get away with it! Main problem with 62 is the wines - they are pretty rank! I think the guy who chooses them drinks beer! For a better glass of wine go down the road to the Cock.
anonymous - 29 Nov 2005 16:54
Good points - lovely bar, popular and busy at the weekend, with fun loving bar staff and a good selection of drink. Worries - food quality has dipped, the music volume has been cranked up to deafening in recent weeks and there is a permanent fug of ciggie smoke. All in all, one of the best places in St Albans (unless you are an asthmatic)
Dee - 27 Oct 2004 19:04
Alex Bentley is the best barman in st.Albans. He makes it a pleasure to spend your money! Nice bar, nice people!

Graeme Souness - 20 Sep 2004 17:53
Place has a great atmosphere - opens late on a Friday / Saturday but doesn't need bouncers despite this. Crowd all from say late 20s - early 40s. London Pride OK, music good, staff funky!
Richard - 7 Sep 2004 01:04
Pleasant, young atmosphere, and staff friendly. Good wines although expensive. Food here used to be excellent but has gone downhill in quality from 2004 and prices have increased. Menu boards very poor compared to what they once were. Website seems to have been abandoned, which is a shame.
Allan Stewart - 18 Mar 2004 01:02
Really nice and cool bar has an excellent if a little pricey wine and spirit selection some cosy leather chairs really top rate food attractive and friendly bar staff nice ambience and atmosphere
